Job Description:
The research associate will work under the mentorship of the Dr. Jonathan Slaughter within the Center for Perinatal Research. Projects will utilize analyses of large, national databases and local clinically focused datasets to examine the comparative effectiveness of understudied medications and other treatments for sick newborns.

A strong data analytic background is required, and the associate will conduct STATA, SAS, SPSS, or R programming and analysis as needed on large databases such as hospital administrative data sets and survey datasets. The associate will provide database support, conduct basic statistical analyses as needed with the support of an economist or biostatistician, and contribute to report and manuscript writing.

Responsibilities:

1. Creates and/or modify STATA, SAS, SPSS, or R programs to carry out basic analytic plans (multilevel logistic and linear regressions). Prepares reports, inclusive of graphs and tables of the results of studies.

2. Collaborates with economist or biostatistician to learn and conduct additional analyses as needed for project reports and manuscript publication

3. Works with principal investigator (Dr. Slaughter) in the development of technical materials such as scientific publications, grant submissions, institutional review board applications, and annual research progress reports

4. Collaborates with research computing collaborators and external organizations to assist in the analysis of large administrative data sets

5. Obtains consents from parents and/or legal guardians for prospective investigations.

6. Assists Dr. Slaughter’s research students and trainees participating in large database research (summer medical students, neonatology fellows, pediatric residents,)

7. Tracks projects and initiatives to ensure they move forward; reports to principal investigator when progress is lacking and identifies needed action

8. Performs miscellaneous related duties as required. Performs other duties and maintains flexible schedule as required

KNOWLEDGE , SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

1. Master’s degree in epidemiology, public health, health services research, bioinformatics, biostatistics, economics, public policy, or other related field, preferred.

2. Prefer 1-2 years of experience in clinical research with experience in programming and analyzing large datasets. Biostatistics- understanding of regression analysis, analyses of clustered or hierarchical data (mixed-effects models/GEE).

3. Ability to learn more advance techniques for the analysis of observational data (propensity scoring, instrumental variable analysis, generalized structural equation modeling)

4. A background in epidemiology is preferred (understanding of clinical and/or population health research techniques and study design)

5. Excellent organizational, communication and self-management skills

6. Motivation and desire to gain new knowledge through research

7. Strong scientific writing skills, excellent written and verbal communication

8. Strong knowledge of PCs and word processing and data management software
