PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Laboratory Animal Sciences Program (LASP) provides exceptional quality animal care and technical support services for animal research performed at the National Cancer Institute at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research. LASP executes this mission by providing a broad spectrum of state-of-the-art technologies and services that are focused on the design, generation, characterization and application of genetically engineered and biological animal models of human disease, which are aimed at the development of targeted diagnostics and therapies. LASP contributes to advancing human health, developing new treatments, and improving existing treatments for cancer and other diseases while ensuring safe and humane treatment of animals.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The Research Associate I is responsible for managing a complex, multigenic mouse colony and is instrumental in designing, optimizing and implementing complex breeding protocols. The technician will also be responsible for performing specialized experimental procedures involving the use of animal models.
Duties include: 1) maintenance of real time animal colony database, 2) genotyping and data interpretation, 3) designing optimal breeding strategies, 4) Independently designing and scheduling experimental studies, 5) performing experiments utilizing experimental compounds and chemical carcinogens, 6) Performing injections via various routes, 7) monitoring phenotypes and treatment responses, 8) collecting blood and tissues, 9) coordinating work with other LASP core facilities, and 10) tumor measuring
This is a change in facility. Work schedule is 8:00 am to 4:30 pm with occasional weekend and holiday hours.
Qualifications:
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) in a field related to the biomedical or veterinary sciences or four (4) years equivalent experience in the appropriate field in lieu of degree Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency A minimum of two (2) years of laboratory animal technical experience Understanding of Mendelian genetics Experience in rodent breeding colony management and associated procedures Experience in performing experimental procedures including surgeries Knowledge of survival surgeries Knowledge of generating cell suspensions Ability to maintain precise, accurate records Computer/data entry skills Knowledge of standard operating procedures for animal facilities and the basic requirements for maintaining laboratory animals and performing scientific procedures involving animal testing and data collection Ability to lift, and carry up to 50 lbs. and wear personal protective equipment
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Excellent observation and organization skills Ability to multi-task Excellent written and oral communications skills AALAS certification
