PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Basic Science Program (BSP) pursues independent, multidisciplinary research programs in basic or applied molecular biology, immunology, retrovirology, cancer biology or human genetics. Research efforts and support are an integral part of the Center for Cancer Research (CCR) at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research (FNLCR).
JOB DESCRIPTION
The Microbiome Core undertakes the characterization of microbiome samples by next generation sequencing to determine composition and variation as influenced by immune, genetic, and host health factors. The core provides support across a spectrum of processes, from nucleic acid isolation through bioinformatics and statistical analysis. The Research Associate II will be responsible for the areas of automated isolation, preparation, PCR and sequencing of DNA on next generation (Illumina, MiSeq) sequencing platforms as part of a team working to characterize microbiome samples. This work will be performed on the NIH Bethesda campus.

Qualifications:
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university in a field related to biomedical research or four (4) years equivalent experience in the appropriate field in lieu of degree.
- Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.
- In addition to educational requirements, a minimum of five (5) years related biomedical experience.
- Experience or familiarity with robotic sample preparation platforms (epMotion 5070 or similar) for MiSeq or next generation protocols.
- Experience handling and isolating DNA or RNA from samples.
- Experience in PCR preparation.
- Ability to assist in the maintenance of laboratory equipment, biological materials and lab supplies.
- The ability to evaluate experimental quality and to troubleshoot technical aspects of sample handling and sequencing.
- Experience with Excel, and the ability to maintain accurate sample tracking, and perform data management with suitable software.
- Ability to interact, operate, and communicate effectively in a team-oriented work environment.
- This position is subject to obtaining a Public Trust Clearance.
