Research Associate, Molecular Biology and Sequencing
Department: Molecular Biology & Sequencing
Reporting to: Senior Scientist, Molecular Biology & Sequencing
Summary
Foundation Medicine is seeking a talented, highly motivated and results-oriented Research Associate to join the Applications Development team within the Molecular Biology and Sequencing group that is responsible for the evaluation, development and optimization of new genomics assays to address unmet clinical diagnostic opportunities in oncology. The ideal candidate has a working understanding of molecular biology and next generation sequencing, and has research experience in a dynamic multidisciplinary environment. Responsibilities of this position include supporting the development and optimization of new nucleic-acid based clinical diagnostic tests, assistance in processing research samples for assay development and operation of complex laboratory instrumentation.
Primary Responsibilities and Essential Duties
Work with a team of scientists to support ongoing research, development, and optimization of targeted DNA-seq and RNA-seq clinical diagnostic assays.
Assist in early-stage development of new nucleic-acid based clinical tests in collaboration with the Computational Biology team.
Support the timely processing and reporting of oncology research samples to internal and external collaborators.
Author detailed, accurate, and accessible records of experimental data, present results at project and group meetings.

Required Skills and Experience Experience in standard molecular biology techniques (PCR, enzymatic manipulation of DNA/RNA).
Experience working in a dynamic multidisciplinary environment with quickly changing priorities.
Results oriented with daily focus on working to achieve project and group goals.
Operation and maintenance of complex scientific equipment.
Desire to increase knowledge and continue building skill set.
Attention to detail and ability to learn new complex tasks.
Desired Skills and Experience
Experience operating complex instrumentation (NGS, qPCR, Bioanalyzer, lab automation)
Experience working with typical oncology specimens (e.g. FFPE, Blood, Bone Marrow)
Experience with non-NGS genomic assay technologies (qPCR, Nanostring, Sequenom, Microarray)
Ability to (or desire to learn) basic genomics data management and interpretation (e.g. SAMtools, IGV/Picard)
Education or Experience
BSc, MSc, or equivalent, in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Engineering is preferred
Minimum 1-3 years working in Industry and/or Academia. Core Lab experience is especially suited for this role.
Demonstrated ability to clearly communicate scientific results in internal and external presentations and publications
Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic, fast paced team environment
