Job Description:
The employee will be a senior member of Professor Sung’s research group, supporting projects through original research, collaboration with other team members, and mentoring of students.

The employee’s principal research responsibilities will be focused on microbial genome evolution, studying the deleterious fitness effects of mutations and the evolution of mutation rate in pathogens.

The employee will share student mentoring with Professor Sung and will participate in departmental seminars and other professional activities as assigned.

Summary of Position Responsibilities:

This Research Associate position will function somewhat independently to perform research study and conduct laboratory experiments on research projects within well-defined guidelines. The Research Associate is responsible for maintaining the efficient operation of the laboratory; assists the principal investigator with summarization, analysis, and organization of data for publication; may assist with preparation of grant applications; assists and/or teaches graduate students and others rotating through the lab; and assists in supervision and training of junior research personnel.

Minimum Education/Experience:

1) Ph.D. in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Evolutionary, Computational Biology, Computer Science or related areas. Experience with both molecular biology and computer languages is a preferred.

2) A strong experimental and theoretical background with evidence of these skills related to population genomics, evolution, and computational biology.

3) 2 years of post-doc experience

  • Droplet digital PCR;
  • Mutation accumulation (MA) lines;
  • Mutation Rate Calculations;
  • Bacterial Line Development;
  • High-throughput Sequencing and Assembly;
  • Sequencing and Alignment;
  • Molecular and Microbiological Techniques;
  • Cloning;
  • BSL-2/3 Experience
