Job Description:
About the Agency

The Space Biosciences Research Branch (Code SCR) within the Science Directorate (Code S), at NASA Ames Research Center is currently seeking interested applicants for the position of Senior Research Scientist. NASA is interested in understanding biological systems responses to the unique environment of space. The work involves leading and coordinating the systems biology scientific research effort for the GeneLab project and its stakeholders, Space Life and Physical Sciences (SLPS) and the International Space Station (ISS) and the Human Research Program (HRP).

To receive consideration, you must submit a resume and answer NASA-specific questions. The NASA questions appear after you submit your resume and are transferred to the NASA web site. If you successfully apply, USAJOBS will show your application status as 'Received'. If your status is 'Application Status Not Available', you have not successfully applied. Do not rely on a USAJOBS email to confirm successful application. Only an email from NASA confirms a successful application.

Duties The incumbent will play a key role on the GeneLab Project providing leadership and strategic consulting for defining the research direction and priorities including designing and conducting program plans that include foundational and applied research in systems biology, defining short and long term goals, and evaluating processes and outcomes/results. The incumbent's focus is on the GeneLab Project and will play a key role as the agency's interface to the systems biology research community. The research conducted under the GeneLab Project is focused on molecular components of the cell and organism, including the genome, transcriptome, proteome, and metabolome; as well as any other biologically relevant systems data from future space biology spaceflight missions. As a leading scientific expert in systems biology, the incumbent will have a demonstrated ability to generate hypothesis from large data sets and to use such data to develop predictive understanding of responses where epidemiological or detailed experimental data are limited, such as in the case of space flight experiments. He/she uses omics information obtained from experimental systems databases and humans to evaluate mechanisms and extrapolate between species and to humans, including areas within radiation, microgravity, and/or immune and stress response. The incumbent conducts cutting edge laboratory research and technology development to understand the model living biological organisms and the pathway functioning within the organism.

The incumbent delivers oral reports of research findings at technical forums for in-house, local, national, and international audiences; as well as refereeing manuscripts for technical journals, reviewing research proposals of peers, leading workshops, and organizing and chairing sessions for major scientific meetings. He/she is responsible for competing for grants, leading research teams, and collaborating as a senior scientist to conduct a ground, and possibly flight, research program. Also, the incumbent¿s published work, in the leading international journals, will be viewed as authoritative and at the leading edge of research. He/she establishes research strategy and partnerships to leverage substantial investments in research and technology by industry, foundations, and other agencies.
