Job Description:
Cargill’s Bio R&D organization is hiring a Research Biotechnologist with experience in metabolic engineering and molecular genetics, with special emphasis on applying genomics and bioinformatics to the development of novel microbial strains for production of commercially relevant biochemical products. The position requires the ability to independently design, synthesize and assemble genetic constructs and accurately integrate these into microbial strains as well as design and execute mutagenesis and selection approaches. The position may also carry out evaluations of microbial strains by DNA sequence and structure analysis, and use that information for sequence-based phenotyping and sequence-based trait identification. In addition, the position will be expected to carry out RNA expression analysis, develop and optimize methods for strain construction and evaluation, and evaluate strains for performance characteristics at a range of small scales (microplate to shake flask). The position will be expected to collect, organize, interpret data, and develop next steps, report results in written form, and provide summaries of work and interpretation of results to the project group in prepared presentations.

60% - Execute on experimental work plans. Design and construct gene expression and knockout genetic constructs, and use them to build new microbial strains by genetic engineering. May also involve microbial strain optimization through mutagenesis and selection. In conjunction with strain development, the position involves the use of DNA sequence analysis, hybridization technologies, qualitative and quantitative PCR, enzyme assays for strain characterization. In particular, there is an emphasis on utilizing genomics/bioinformatics approaches to identify genes contributing to novel traits.

15% - Evaluate new strains using small scale cultures (microplates to shake flasks) for performance.

10% - Collect, organize, and evaluate data, write reports, develop testable hypotheses, plan experimental activities.

10% - Stay current with scientific literature, patents, etc.

5% - Prepare and present summaries of data to strain development group and to the larger project team. Qualifications

Required:

-Limited travel between Cargill locations.

-Pursuing a PhD with emphasis in a Biological Science discipline, completion of PhD by 2017.

-Successful completion of an internship with Cargill Biotechnology R&D in 2016.

-Demonstrated knowledge and experience in microbial genetics and molecular biology.

-Expertise and hands-on experience in one or more of the following areas: molecular biology techniques, gene expression, gene/pathway manipulations, biochemistry and enzyme assays, metabolic engineering of microbial strains for production of commercially relevant biochemicals, quantitative microbial physiology with emphasis on metabolic regulation.

-Experience with the use of bioinformatics for evaluation of genomic DNA sequence data sets

Desired: -Commercial or industrial biotechnology R&D lab experience.

-Pursuing an advanced degree in a biotechnology-related field with an emphasis on microbial biotechnology.

-Experience with metabolic pathway engineering of yeast.

-Hands-on experience in QPCR, genome editing, library construction, and/or site directed mutagenesis.

-Ability to work effectively with others in a cross-functional team environment.

-Demonstration of initiative and independent judgment.

-Clear and timely communication of ideas, results and conclusions in both written and verbal formats.
