Job Description:

Due to our continued growth, we are seeking a dynamic Associate CIO of Research Computing who will work collaboratively with departmental chairs, deans, executives of UMMS, and external partners to lead the development of best practices and standards related to technologies utilized for basic, clinical, and translational research programs. The individual should be at the cutting edge of high performance computing and provide leadership in the effective and efficient use of high –performance computational and data storage to support leading edge research performed at UMMS. Responsibilities: The following competencies are essential:

  • Lead and facilitate the development of Research IT goals, strategies and priorities for the basic and clinical science communities
  • Lead the evolution, installation, maintenance, configuration, and customization of the research computing infrastructure and facilitate the computational needs of the research community
  • Develop recommendations for creating a collaborative environment for end user services, infrastructure access and the evaluation [for fit] of new technologies/products
  • Facilitate accommodations and solutions for the research community related to IT services and infrastructure utilization that are outside of standard School practices
  • Function as a conduit/gateway between departments and external computing relationships like UMass 5 Campus initiatives, Green HPCC, regional Grid Computing and national organizations/peers
  • Lead the Research IT governance process for managing the delivery of research based requests
  • Develop the model for providing the sustainable support required for quantitative research at a campus-wide level, as well as the ability to support the individual departments in the administration and support of their local environments
  • Coordinate and provide resource to activities in support of existing Informatics cores (e.g. bioinformatics, imaging informatics, medical informatics, chemical informatics, statistics, etc.)
  • Assist/lead in the coordination of grant development, research projects and [identification and acquisition] funding resources
  • Provide consulting to UMass researchers in the utilization of High Performance Computing (HPC), local support environments, high end storage and software tools
  • Provide technical resource for computing practices, debugging/tuning and in the software development architectures for research areas
  • Conduct/manage technology education programs, workshops and conferences
  • Develop and manage sustainable budget models for research initiatives
  • Coordinate with UMMHC, our clinical partner and their IT department in data sharing collaboration
  • Coordinate support services and models for current and future services
  • Assure that department based research IT systems meet all university, state and federal requirements for data sharing, integrity, security and business continuity
  • Attend relevant meetings, seminars, and conferences and become visible at the national level
  • Publish and present on appropriate subjects in the academic research computing arena
Qualifications: Master’s Degree in Bioinformatics or Computer Science, or equivalent experience and 10 years of management experience in large IT organization, with at least 5 in the fields of data warehousing and business intelligence and 3 years in an Academic Medical Center, are essential. System administration of Unix/Linux systems demonstrated strategic thinking abilities and an enterprise-wide perspective, effective negotiator and consensus builder in an academic setting and will have a collaborative leadership style with excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills with technical and non-technical users are also essential. Must also have the following experience:
  • Strong data analytics that demonstrates skills with summarization, historical data mining, and a solid design approach for data presentation
  • Owning and managing data architecture, including data dictionary, logical data models, terminology translation services, and deployment and change management processes
  • Designing and implementing data transformation (ETL) processes and technologies, including error handling and alerting
  • Metadata management
  • One or more of the leading business intelligence platforms (e.g., Cognos, Business Objects, etc.)
Must also have strong project management skills, strong interpersonal and consensus-building skills as well as the ability to lead, manage, and deal with ambiguity in a dynamic and growing research community. PhD in Bioinformatics or Computer Science, or equivalent degree(s), with proven experience in providing high performance computing solutions in a research environment would be highly beneficial.
