School of Cancer Sciences

This bioinformatician post is to join the Centre for Computational Biology (CCB) led by Prof Jean-Baptiste Cazier to contribute significantly to the delivery and execution of the University research programme.  S/he will be in charge of organising and analysing diverse datasets, working in close collaboration with PI from across the University of Birmingham, especially the College of Medicine and Dental Sciences as well as the College of Life and Environmental Sciences.

This post involves expert analysis of cutting-edge genomics and clinical data; this includes data from gene expression and gene sequencing, RNASeq, microRNA, and immunohistochemistry analyses.

The postholder will provide bioinformatics support to ensure data received and generated by research groups is used in an efficient, standardised, secure and accurate manner using cutting-edge technologies and adhering to information governance standards. S/he will also be involved in supporting the training proposed by the CCB towards the university’s students and staff.

The post is located within the CCB, central to the University of Birmingham with excellent facilities and an active research atmosphere. The CCB aims to combine multiple disciplines across the University and its partners to maximise the analysis and application of Big Data, focusing on Development, Application, and Training.

The mission objectives of the CCB are:

• To promote excellence in Computational Biology, Systems Biology, and Bioinformatics across the range of fundamental and applied sciences, in both the University and allied Health Care arenas

• To federate expertise through world class, independent and collaborative research, as well as teaching to a broad audience, ranging from undergraduates to health care professionals

• To provide an environment, both physical and structural, to foster collaborative work and cross-fertilisation

A key strength of the CCB lies in its central role in the University rather than isolated within a single department, school or college, allowing for both the concentration of shared expertise and resources, as well as interdisciplinary interaction with chairs and lectureships in Clinical Bioinformatics, Computational Biology and Environmental Bioinformatics. As a physical location on campus where Bioinformaticians can meet and work together, the CCB will facilitate interaction by welcoming and hosting both local and external collaborators.

Applicants should have a PhD or equivalent experience in Bioinformatics, Mathematics, Statistics or Computer Sciences. A relevant degree which should be linked to informatics and science and demonstrate an understanding of both science and informatics in a clinical setting
