Research Fellow, Bioinformatics data quality evaluationThe University of MelbourneComputing and Information SystemsAustralia-VIC-Melbourne The University of Melbourne in Melbourne, Australia is offering one postdoctoral research fellow position with a 2-year appointment funded by the Australian Research Council. The chief investigators for this project are Professor Justin Zobel and Associate Professor Karin Verspoor in the Department of Computing and Information Systems in the Melbourne School of Engineering.

You will participate in the development of methods for evaluating data quality in bioinformatics databases. The project will apply text mining, information retrieval, and natural language processing strategies to identify supporting evidence for structured database facts in the biomedical literature. You will conduct independent research, leading to the preparation and publication of research outcomes in conferences and journals. You will design and implement experiments, perform detailed data analysis, and write up the results of the research for publication.&nbsp ESSENTIAL
1. Completion of a PhD in a relevant discipline such as Computer Science, Bioinformatics, or Computational Bioscience;
2. High level computer programming skills;
3. Demonstrated familiarity with natural language processing, information retrieval, and/or machine learning algorithms;
4. A track record of quality, independent research as evidenced by research publications in leading conferences and journals commensurate with opportunity;
5. Demonstrated ability to develop new experimental protocols;
6. Demonstrated capacity to communicate research concepts to technical and non-technical audiences;
7. Excellent ability in analysing data, problem solving and maintaining accurate research records;
8. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including an ability to interact with internal and external stakeholders (academic, administrative and support staff) in a courteous and effective manner;
9. Excellent ability to work co-operatively in a multi-disciplinary team environment and liaise with associates from both industry and academia;
10. Demonstrated experience in using initiative, working with minimal supervision and ability to prioritise tasks to achieve project objectives within timelines;
11. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, demonstrated by presentation of research results at conferences, internal forums and through manuscript submissions.

DESIRABLE
1. Experience in biomedical text mining, specifically information extraction and concept recognition;
2. Understanding of biomedical vocabularies and ontology resources, including the Gene Ontology;
3. Familiarity with biological databases, such as the UniProt resources;
4. Java language programming experience;
5. Experience in supervision of graduate students and/or research assistants;
6. Experience in the successful completion of ethics applications and submission of grant applications;
7. Ability to structure, engage and present information clearly to various audiences;
8. Experience in a leadership role within a research team.

The appointment will be made at the level of Research Fellow Grade 1, with a corresponding annual salary in excess of AUD$79,500 plus 9.5% superannuation contribution.
