Job Description:
We seek to recruit a full-time postdoctoral-level Research Fellow in Bioinformatics and/or Biostatistics to join the ‘metabolomics ecosystem’ at the University of Birmingham, primarily contributing to the NERC Biomolecular Analysis Facility – Birmingham (NBAF-B), the UK’s national research centre for Environmental Metabolomics. Additionally, to engage with scientists in Phenome Centre Birmingham as well as Viant’s, Dunn’s and Weber’s research teams. The NBAF-B national facility offers a comprehensive metabolomics research service to environmental scientists from across the UK, including experimental design, metabolite extraction, measurement of metabolites using NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry, metabolite identification and extensive data handling and computational/statistical analyses. The research within NBAF-B addresses major 21st century challenges within the marine, freshwater and terrestrial environments, including studies in environmental toxicology and global climate change. NBAF-B has access to the University’s world-class analytical facilities, including a dozen high resolution LC-MS and direct infusion mass spectrometers and to several 600 MHz NMR spectrometers. The Research Fellow in Bioinformatics/Biostatistics will focus primarily on the development and application of the computational and/or statistical analyses of large-scale mass spectrometry and NMR spectroscopy metabolomics datasets using a range of methods. In addition they will undertake the experimental design, data processing, spectral interpretation and/or network analyses of the metabolomics data. This will include scripting in Matlab, R and/or Python. The post holder will work with ca. 25 other metabolomics scientists in NBAF-B, Phenome Centre Birmingham and three related research groups. The position also includes some independent research in bioinformatics / biostatistics, for example in toxicokinetics to investigate associations between the exposome and organism health, as well as the training of scientists in metabolomics through the Birmingham Metabolomics Training Centre. Applicants should hold a PhD in bioinformatics, biostatistics, chemometrics or metabolomics, with significant hands-on experience in the computational or statistical analysis of metabolomics or related data. Please note this post is aligned to external funding and therefore the salary on offer is up to a maximum of £31,604 only. Fixed term until 31 March 2021 Full time starting salary is normally in the range £29,799 to £38,832. With potential progression once in post to £41,212 a year.
