Job Description:
The Microbiome Systems Medicine Group at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota is seeking multiple talented and enthusiastic postdoctoral researchers.

The applicant is expected to address one of three themes in the lab: 1. Systems-level, integrative analysis of ’omics data from clinical samples to obtain insights into disease-associated microbial compositional shifts; 2. Developing statistical inference and machine-learning tools applied toward microbiome data to monitor gut wellness and diagnose disease; and 3. Characterizing microbial community-scale network models to investigate global functional interdependencies. Fellows are highly encouraged to develop their own project paths, as long as they fit within these general interests.

This position presents a unique opportunity to carry out highly impactful human microbiome research in an interdisciplinary, clinically-oriented environment, benefiting from collaborations with established academic scholars and medical professionals of diverse expertise. Fellows will be mentored by Dr. Jaeyun Sung and other faculty investigators of the Microbiome Program in the Center for Individualized Medicine at the Mayo Clinic. The Center is a vibrant, well-funded environment, with strong mentoring and training opportunities for individual career development. In addition, he/she will have access to a wealth of resources including high-quality data, a state-of-the-art high-performance computing facility, and the latest sequencing platforms.

Responsibilities:

A Research Fellow at Mayo Clinic is a temporary position intended to provide training and education in research. Individuals will train in the research program of a Mayo Clinic principal investigator. Qualified individuals will demonstrate the potential for research as evidenced by their training and peer-reviewed publications and should become competitive for national research grants. Proof of English proficiency is required for J-1 Short-Term Scholars, Research Scholars, Professors, Specialists, and Student Interns sponsored by Mayo Clinic. 800146; J2WRTP

Qualifications:

The applicant must have a PhD in one of the following fields: computational biology/microbiology, biostatistics, bioinformatics, biophysics, mathematics, or any engineering discipline. PhD candidates with soon expected graduation are also encouraged to apply. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, willingness to assume large responsibility of the research project, strong ability to independently and creatively solve research problems, while working effectively with the principal investigator and lab colleagues, is a must. Prior experience working with multi-/meta-’omics analysis, systems biology, machine learning, metabolic modeling, or network science, as demonstrated through past research accomplishments, would be ideal. Furthermore, the candidate should be familiar with, or inclined to quickly learn, specific programming languages (i.e. R, Python, and Matlab) and bioinformatics tools for processing and analyzing ’omics datasets.

Additional Info:
The overall goal of our group (www.sung-lab.org) is to apply systems approaches to fundamentally understand the complex relationship between commensal microbial organisms and human health. We develop novel network modeling and analysis strategies for investigating various types of multi-/meta-’omics data; in particular, we are currently focusing our efforts on characterizing the global interconnectivity and interdependencies of our body’s microbial community, as well as identifying the primary biomolecular processes driving microbiome-associated chronic disease.

To Apply :

Our group launched in April 2017. If you are interested in joining, please email Dr. Jaeyun Sung ( Sung.Jaeyun@mayo.edu ) with your CV, contact information for a minimum of two individuals who can provide strong reference letters, PDFs of your publications, and a < 1-page personal statement describing: your general research interests, previous experience, brief summary of the area(s) you wish to undertake in our group, and career goals. The initial appointment will be for two years with the possibility of an extension. Salaries will commensurate with previous experience.
