Company : University of Lincoln Country : Role : Research Scientist
Job Description:
Fixed term for 3 years The post will involve the use of a range of molecular techniques to identify and study both bacteria and fungi at a range of scales: strains, populations and communities. Since this post will cover a range of topics, we anticipate the types of techniques used will employ classic culture, but mostly involve the use of DNA extraction, PCR, RFLP and next-generation DNA sequencing methods. These approaches will be used to analyse individual strains, whole genomes, populations of genomes and metagenomics amplicon sequencing to analyse communities. The post will then go onto process and analyse the data, including next-generation sequence data, to identify strains, and test for the effect of various interventions and analyse temporal and spatial patterns in populations and communities. The position will be in conjunction with the Lincoln Institute for Agri-Food Technology and the National Centre for Food Manufacturing, and thus the focus of work will be toward agricultural and food safety and manufacturing applications. We anticipate this position will provide academic impact though the nature of the research questions and techniques used, but also societal and commercial impact due to the subject area of interest. The post holder will be focused on helping businesses to identify and implement opportunities to innovate through the application and science which leads to introduction of new and improved processes or products overseeing a range of projects with businesses from short term 1 or 2 day projects through to far more in-depth business partnered projects running over the course of a number of months / years. The post offers an outstanding opportunity for a committed researcher to work within a dynamic, industry facing university environment and gain valuable experience in partnering in research with businesses, some of whom are at the cutting edge of technological innovation for the food and agriculture sector. The post is one of several posts being established to secure the success of The Greater Lincolnshire Agri-food Innovation Platform (GLAFIP) project, the background to which is provided in the job description.
