Job Description:
The Faculty of Technology, Natural Sciences and Maritime Sciences has a vacancy for a position as Doctoral Research Fellow (PhD) in Exosomes in human cancer and hibernating brown bears - a bioinformatical approach" from 01.10.17. The position is attached to the Department of Natural Sciences and Environmental Health and reports to the Head of Department. The place of employment is Bø in Telemark. The PhD position is associated with Department of Cancer Genetics, Institute for Cancer Research, Oslo University Hospital, Oslo. This PhD project is in the field of translational research with a focus on plasma exosomes and their cargo. Exosomes are membrane vesicles of endocytic origin with a size of 40 - 100 nm. The idea that exosome cargo reflects a certain snapshot of the cells of origin and the discovery that exosomes are present and stable in all biological fluids, make them powerful liquid biopsies. Our research aim is to explore the translational value of tumor or tissue derived exosomes as biomarkers in human cancers (i.e., pancreatic and lung) and brown bears, respectively. The PhD candidate will primarly be working with computational/statistical integration of tissue (incl. transcriptomics and proteomics) and plasma exosome cargo data. Comparing metabolic regulation and intercellular communication during extreme bodily conditions between different organisms may gain new insight to regulation processes of multiple systems. We are searching for a highly motivated candidate, interested in translational research, with a strong bionformatical background. Qualifications: Applicants to the PhD position must document excellent skills in bioinformatics (beyond the use of existing bioinformatical tools), and a Master’s degree or equivalent higher education qualifications in bioinformatics, applied statistics or applied mathematics. The applicant must have gained the degree within the application deadline. It is a requirement that the successful applicant is granted admission to the university’s doctoral programme in Ecology. Admission to the doctoral programme is a condition for appointment as a research fellow. The staff at the faculty work within subject teams to a large extent, and the candidate must be motivated to share his or her knowledge and cooperate. Personal suitability for the position will be emphasized. Good collaborative and communication skills are essential, as well as the ability to work independently. A good command of English is required. We are looking for a PhD candidate who has: -Strong statistical and bioinformatical skills -Strong motivation and interest in solving biological problems -Ability to interpret data in an independent and innovative manner -Excellent oral and written communication skills in English -The ability to work both independently and with a team -High working capacity
