Job Description:
The Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at NC State University is widely considered to be one of the best of its kind in the nation. Our goal is to give students the support and encouragement they need to achieve their individual intellectual promise, and our faculty and staff take pride in the fact that our graduates are recognized for their technical competence, creativity, enthusiasm, and professional skills. The Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering is part of the College of Engineering and an academic department with undergraduate, graduate and Ph.D. programs. For more information, please visit: www.che.ncsu.edu/about/about.html.
Essential Job Duties
The purpose of this Research Scholar position is to develop new molecular tools that can control the biochemistry and biophysics of chromatin in mammalian and yeast cells. This will entail high throughput molecular biology, biochemistry, cell culture, flow cytometry, confocal microscopy, and systems biology analysis. The initial goals will be to demonstrate the ability to alter chromatin states at individual endogenous loci. These tools will then be applied to controlling and enhancing the transitions between different biomedically relevant cell states. This includes stem cell differentiation and reprogramming to cells for use in cell replacement therapies.
Duties will include but not be limited to:
* Design and conduct wetlab and computational experiments.
* Co-write papers with the PI.
* Assist Principal Investigator with writing 1-3 grants per year.
* Train students in wetlab techniques and general biological knowledge.
* Experimental and computational skills include molecular biology, biochemistry and protein production/purification, microscopy, flow cytometry, yeast and mammalian cell biology, and minor amounts of bioinformatics analysis of large gene expression data sets.
Other Work/Responsibilities
* Maintain equipment and lab safety protocols in collaboration with other lab members. Present work at group meetings.
* Assist in mentoring undergraduate and graduate students.
* Standard laboratory duties along with minor lab management duties.
Minimum Education/Experience
* PhD in molecular biology, biochemistry, bioengineering, or chemical engineering.
* 5 years postdoctoral research.
Departmental Required Skills
* Previous experience with molecular biology, chromatin biology, cell culture, yeast culture, biochemical assays and protein purification/production, flow cytometry, microscopy, and bioinformatics analysis of gene expression data is encouraged.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
N/A
Required License or Certification
