THIS IS AN INTERNSHIP POSITION AND ALL APPLICANTS MUST BE REGISTERED FULL TIME STUDENTS TO APPLY The Industrial and Applied Genomics Group of the Accelerated Discovery Lab at IBM Research is looking for a summer intern in software engineering, to work on development and research on the Metagenomics Computation and Analytics Workbench (MCAW) project. MCAW is the main informatics platform used in the Sequence the Food Supply Chain Consortium (http://www.research.ibm.com/client-programs/foodsafety/). It is a compute cluster and web application that enables the management and analysis of DNA and RNA sequence data using extensive bioinformatics methods. The intern will participate in one or more projects to improve the scientific power and usability MCAW offers its users. Candidate projects include: • Scale-out bioinformatics using Apache spark. • Capability extension using Docker. • Advanced visualization of genomic data and statistical analysis results. • Experimentation with novel informatics methods. Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering or a related field, or equivalent experience. -Required Technical and Professional Expertise. -Programming skill and experience in Java. -Collaboration and communication skills. -Familiarity with working in Linux. Preferred Technical and Professional Experience: -Experience in system administration on Linux clusters. -Programming skills in languages such as Python, Perl, bash, R, Scala, Javascript. -Knowledge of web application development; Websphere; Eclipse; JPA. -Familiarity with Spark and Docker. -Familiarity with DNA/RNA sequence data and informatics. -High performance statistical computing. Required Education: Bachelor's Degree
