Job Description:
The Research Technologist will investigate the cellular and genetic processes that govern behavior. The primary duties and responsibilities of the employee will include: carrying out an independent research project developing image analysis software to track and quantify spider behavior, performing behavior experiments, and performing analyses of genomic data.

The research technologist will set up and perform experiments studying the contribution of neurotransmitters, neuromodulators, and endocrine factors in spider orb-weaving behavior.

The primary duties and responsibilities of the job:

  • Independent research: The technologist will conduct his/her own independent research project and also collaborate with other members of the lab in their research projects.
  • Lab management duties:Supervising undergraduates and maintaining spider and fly media.
  • Machines and/or equipment used on the job: Materials, machines and/or equipment used on the job include autoclaves, thermocyclers, balances, pH meters, centrifuges, electrophoresis system, dissecting microscopes, and compound microscopes.
  • Computer or other special needs for the position: Excellent organizational skills are required. Knowledge of MATLAB and Python.
Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences or computer science is required. Previous experience with molecular biology, behavioral biology, or image analysis are strongly preferred. A strong understanding of genetics is a plus. Excellent organizational skills, record keeping, programming skills (especially MATLAB and Python) are very important.

Previous experience with computational ethology, computer science, or arthropod research preferred.
