Job Description:
This position involves the development and evaluation of bioinformatics software, as well as application to analysis of basic and clinical research data. With supervisor direction, the researcher work with a collaborative research team of software developers, data scientists and biological researchers to help develop and test software used in workflows that integrate different types of genomic and proteomic data. The researcher will help to document software operations, working with others in the research team to apply the software to basic research studies and generate training material to promote use by others. The researcher will also help develop and implement a mathematical model sexually transmitted infections, working with a Dr. Eva Enns and research team members.

Job Duties:

60% - Software Development and Testing:

Software tools for analysis of genomic and proteomic data will be wrapped in the Galaxy platform and tested for functionality. Optimization and bug fixes will be carried out as needed, working with other members of the research team to evaluate performance and additional features required

20% - Documentation and Application to Research Data:

Documentation will be developed in collaboration with other research team members to enable training of users in the use of implemented software tools. In some cases, work will be done with collaborating biological researchers seeking to utilize software tools on their data.

20% - Mathematical Modeling of Sexual Transmitted Infections: Literature and existing datasets pertaining to sexual behavior will be reviewed. A mathematical model of a sexually transmitted infection will be adapted to specific example cases. The model will be simulated under different scenarios and assumptions and results will be compiled / summarized.

Required Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in bioinformatics, computational biology or related field and one year of experience or equivalent combination of related education and work experience to equal five (5) years.
  • Demonstrated expertise in programming (Python, R, JavaScript etc.) is required.
  • Experience and deep knowledge of bioinformatics is necessary, specifically in the area of software development related to mass spectrometry-based proteomics data analysis and integration with other ‘omics data types.
  • Proven ability to work with a team of other researchers (biologists, software developers, clinicians etc) is also essential.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • At least 1 year of experience working on bioinformatics-related projects is preferred.
  • Familiarity with the Galaxy bioinformatics platform, is also preferred.
