Researcher – Metabolic Modeling

Job Description:
The laboratory of Physiology and Biotechnology of Algae aims at increasing knowledge on mechanisms and strategies microalgae use to cope with changing environment. The activity concerns both biotechnology and environmental purposes. Microalgae are a strategic domain for valorization at Ifremer. The research project of the laboratory consists in three directions: Cellular resilience and acclimation to environmental forcing, particularly in response to nutrient (N and P) forcing Adaptation processes Interactions between microalgae and bacteria All three directions are explored through an integrated approach including ecophysiology, molecular biology and bioinformatics. The laboratory also develops experimental devices for its own needs, which can result in technology transfer to other Ifremer laboratories or partner organizations. Inside the RBE department (Biological and Environmental Resources) and the BRM Unit (Biotechnology and Marine Resources), he/she will be under the hierarchical responsibility of the head of the laboratory of Physiology and Biotechnology of Algae. He or she will develop a research on modeling, simulation and metabolic optimization for microalgae. Modeling will deeply contribute to a better understanding of biological mechanisms, which is required for all physiological studies on microalgae. He/she will contribute to all three research domains of the laboratory on marine microalgae, in order to : Identify environmental factors that induce metabolic reorientation towards target molecules (lipids, proteins, carbohydrates and pigments) Clarify complex interaction mechanisms between microalgae and bacteria in natural and artificial ecosystems. The research will have both environmental and biotechnological purposes. General areas of responsibility (principal missions) Together with other researchers, he/she will contribute in ongoing projects in the laboratory and in studies on microalgae physiology and metabolism. He/she will implement mathematical tools to study microalgae metabolism, to simulate and optimize fluxes (carbon, nitrogen …) at cellular scale under various conditions. He/she will initiate research activities on modeling and understanding of metabolic acclimation and adaptation to abiotic and biotic forcing of the environment. Principal activities Together with the laboratory teams and partner organizations, he/she will be more specifically in charge of: Contributing to the construction of the metabolic network for the microalgae Tisochrysis lutea, on the basis of in silico data recently obtained at the laboratory (genetic, trancriptomic and proteomic data) Development and validation of modeling approaches to simulate various cell metabolisms (carbon, and nitrogen, protein synthesis, energy, photosynthesis, lipid and carotenoid production) Applying to funding (region, ANR and Europe) Valorization of results and active contribution to the laboratory scientific production (in particular for international publications) Collaborative work environment Internal collaborative relationship: He/she will collaborate with researchers in the laboratory in the field of ecophysiology and genomic and will develop new collaborations inside and outside of the BRM unit. External collaborative relationship: Thanks to his/her skills in microalgae biology and metabolism, he/she will be the interface between researchers in the laboratory and experts in mathematical modeling from academic partner organizations, in France and abroad.
