Job Description:
This position description does not represent a current opening but may be used to identify candidates with skills and experience for positions within Leidos Biomedical Research that frequently become available. Candidates who express an interest may be considered for future positions at Leidos Biomedical Research.

The Advanced Biomedical Computing Center (ABCC) is a part of the Data Science and Information Technology Program (DSITP) at Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc. The ABCC provides technology development, scientific consultation, collaboration and training, and high-performance computing support to the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and National Institutes of Health (NIH) scientists and staff. The ABCC supports the NCI/NIH research community by developing computational infrastructure, software, algorithms, and informatics solutions.

This position provides dedicated support for the RNA Biology Laboratory in NCI’s Centers for Cancer Research (CCR). Areas under study include identifying the results of transcription and processing errors, identifying the direct targets of RNA-binding proteins and elucidating the ways in which DNA and RNA damage, RNA binding proteins and noncoding RNAs affect mammalian, yeast and bacterial transcriptomes. The position requires extensive experience in analyzing data from experiments such as RNA-Seq, HITS-CLIP, PAR-CLIP, iCLIP, Tail-Seq and NET-Seq.

Basic Functions Of This Position Include:

  • Analysis of RNA-Seq, HITS-CLIP, PAR-CLIP, iCLIP, Tail-Seq and NET-Seq experiments, including mapping, quality control, trouble-shooting and downstream analyses.
  • Develop and/or adapt scientific software using various programming languages such as Perl, Python, C, and R.
  • Primary sequence alignment, secondary and tertiary structure analyses for RNA experiments.
  • Analyze data generated in the laboratory and obtained from public databases such as The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA)
  • Analysis of base modifications and the impact of post-transcriptional processing events on bioinformatics pipelines and analyses.
  • Maintain, develop, and document bioinformatics software and analysis pipelines.
  • Work in a team environment and contribute to publications, presentations, and provide training in RNA bioinformatics analyses.
Working knowledge of various programming languages such as Perl, Python, C, and R is also required. The candidate should also have some knowledge and experience in RNA Biology, such as primary sequence alignment, secondary and tertiary structure analyses, analysis of base modifications and the ways in which post-transcriptional processing events impact bioinformatic analyses.

Qualifications

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:

  • Possession of a Bachelor's degree (Ph.D. preferred) from an accredited college/university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) in science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Sciences) or related field.
  • Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U. S. equivalency.
  • This position is subject to obtaining and maintaining a Public Trust Clearance.
  • In addition to educational requirements, a minimum of six (6) or more years of progressively responsible relevant experience and:
    • Familiarity with high-throughput data from various types of RNA-sequencing experiments listed above
    • Ability to independently learn new technologies in a rapidly evolving environment
    • Ability to multitask and prioritize workload to meet established goals
    • Strong programming skills using various programming languages such as Python, C, and R
    • Strong communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:

Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:

  • Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Computational Science, Biophysics, Biochemistry or related field is highly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of techniques and software used to:
    • Identify the results of transcription and processing errors
    • Identify the direct targets of RNA-binding proteins
    • Elucidate the ways in which RNA binding proteins, noncoding RNAs and post-transciptional modifications affect mammalian, yeast and bacterial transcriptomes
    • Post-Doctoral experience desired
