Job Description:
Job Description We are seeking to recruit a motivated Scientific Curator to work on improving gene annotation for clinical reporting in the Vertebrate Genomics team at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) located at the Wellcome Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK. New technologies have dramatically increased the ability to discover and test for variants with clinical implications. Consistent and unambiguous reporting of these is an absolute requirement for accurate interpretation of variants and understanding disease. The Locus Reference Genomic (LRG) project is a key translational genomics project established to create reference resources for reporting genetic variants. You will expand the coverage of the LRG sequences, chosen in collaboration with researchers and other experts, and provide a bridge from research into clinical applications. The normal duties of this position include: • Working with research and clinical communities internationally in order to create LRG reference sequences. • Liaising with data submitters and those who use LRG sequences e.g. diagnostic laboratories. • Manual analysis of gene annotation. • Liaising with annotators both locally and in the USA. • Managing data releases and interactions with EMBL-EBI resources such as Ensembl. The EBI is part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and it is a world-leading bioinformatics centre providing biological data to the scientific community with expertise in data storage, analysis and representation. EMBL-EBI provides freely available data from life science experiments, performs basic research in computational biology and offers an extensive user training programme, supporting researchers in academic and industry. The Vertebrate Genomics Team, led by Paul Flicek, focuses on integration, annotation and analysis of genomic data, and includes Ensembl, Ensembl Genomes, the NHGRI-EBI GWAS Catalog and the team that manages the 1000 Genomes project resources. This environment provides access to an international collection of projects at the cutting edge of research. Qualifications and Experience You should have a degree or PhD in life sciences or bioinformatics and an in-depth understanding of genetic variation, genomics, and gene annotation. Knowledge of ontologies would be extremely beneficial and previous experience in data curation is highly desirable. It is essential that you have the desire and ability to deliver a high quality product within fixed deadlines. You must be skilled at working with attention to detail. Strong motivation both to work independently and to foster good relationships with a closely interacting team of international scientists is important. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are a prerequisite. Proven skills in project management would be highly advantageous. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working in a UNIX/Linux environment and experienced in working with data tracking systems. Benefits EMBL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation. We provide a dynamic, international working environment and have close ties with both the University of Cambridge and the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. EMBL-EBI staff also enjoy excellent sports facilities, a free shuttle bus to Cambridge and other nearby centres, an active sports and social club and an attractive working environment set in 55 acres of parkland. Application Instructions We welcome applications irrespective of gender and appointment will be based on merit alone. Applications are welcome from all nationalities - visa information will be discussed in more depth with applicants selected for interview. Please apply online through www.embl.org/jobs Additional Information Applications will close at 23:00 GMT on the date listed above.
