Job Description The Pfam and InterPro databases are world leading protein family annotation resources, which are run from within the Protein Families team, led by Rob Finn. There is an opportunity for an expert biocurator to join the team on a full/part time basis. The successful candidate will be expected to generate and annotate new Pfam database entries, as well as maintaining and updating existing entries, based on both user contributions and scientific literature. They will also ensure that the database entries and annotation are propagated to InterPro for use in automated annotation pipelines, both within and outside of EMBL-EBI. The Pfam database is a community-orientated project, as exemplified by the use of Wikipedia to store family annotations. Pfam also has an active user community that submits protein families and requests data analysis. Where appropriate, the candidate will deal with user submissions and requests. The candidate will interact with the Protein Families curation team on a daily basis and will report to the Content Coordinator. They will also interact with existing collaborators (both internal and external).   EMBL-EBI is part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and it is a world-leading bioinformatics centre providing biological data to the scientific community with expertise in data storage, analysis and representation. EMBL-EBI provides freely available data from life science experiments, performs basic research in computational biology and offers an extensive user training programme, supporting researchers in academic and industry. Qualifications and Experience The ideal candidate will be educated to degree level (ideally masters or higher) or equivalent qualification/experience in a biological or closely related scientific discipline. You must have experience with the following:

  • Several years' experience in curating biological data, and/or experimentally investigating proteins.
  • Experience of computational data entry and data standards
  • Experience in widely used bioinformatics tool is essential (ideally related to protein sequence searching and retrieval), with prior experience using HMMER a distinct advantage.
  • Experience in the use of bioinformatics tools, both GUI and command-line.
  • Basic/intermediate knowledge in Linux/Unix commands.
  • A good understanding of protein structure and multiple-sequence alignments.
In addition to the above, basic knowledge in Scripting and basic knowledge of querying relational database e.g. MySQL, are desirable. You will have the ability to read, digest and summarise scientific literature, have an excellent communication skills, both written and oral. The ideal candidate will have a passion for science, ideally protein biology, pay attention to detail, and yet be able to meet deadlines. You have to be a good team player.
