Job Description:
Berkeley Lab is Bringing Science Solutions to the World, and YOU can be a part of it!
In the world of science, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) is synonymous with "excellence." That's why we hire the best - whether in research, finance or other operations. This is a great opportunity to bring your top-notch skills to bear in support of world-class scientific research that addresses national and global challenges!
Position Summary:
Berkeley Lab’s Environmental Genomics & Systems Biology Division has an immediate opening for a Scientific Engineering Associate. This position will serve as a Mass Spectrometry Research Engineer and apply engineering, scientific and/or other technical concepts to develop LC-MS, MALDI and other mass spectrometry-related workflows for analyzing microbial metabolites and secondary metabolite production.
Specific Responsibilities:
Develop, optimize and standardize mass spectrometry instrumentation methods for targeted and untargeted analysis of microbial metabolism, with exometabolomics being a primary focus.
Develop, optimize and standardize sample preparation and extraction methods specific for targeted classes of molecules of interest (e.g. secondary metabolites, lipids, amino acids, etc.) and microbial species, and transfer methods for high-throughput mass spectrometry by integrating liquid handling robotic automation
Innovate novel extraction protocols and mass spec methods for problematic, non-standard samples (e.g. environmental samples such as soils w/ high salt, low concentration, acidic pH)
Implement new technology and new protocols into production
Operate, maintain and troubleshoot mass spectrometry instrumentation
Sample preparation, extraction and analysis
Perform bioinformatics to integrate mass spectrometry-based metabolomics analysis with metagenomics and metatranscriptomics experiments and for functional genomics.
Continuously develop metabolite atlases for rapid annotation and quantification of samples used in data analysis.
Customize experimental plans for mass spectrometry analysis of specific research samples. Process samples, analyze and report results for publication
Analyze mass spectrometry data and prepare results for collaborators and publication.
Contribute to scientific literature with publication of peer-reviewed journal articles
Effectively communicate with the other members in the Metabolomics group and provide implementation plans that includes timeline, procedures, expected outcomes, and risks.
Continuously provide input and suggestions in processing protocols, reagents and new automation protocols.
Summarize experimental results and present them at the group meeting.
Liaison between scientists and scientific, technical, and administrative support within the organization
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in Biochemistry and/or related field with 3-5 years of related work experience. At least 6 month experience in a research or technical setting.
Technical experience in mass spectrometry and a proven track record for:
Operating and maintaining mass spectrometry instrumentation
Developing and optimizing novel LC-MS methods.
Developing and optimizing novel extraction and sample preparation methods for a range of samples (microbes, soils, etc) and target metabolites (e.g. amino acids, carbohydrates, etc) for mass spectrometry analysis
Performing mass spectrometry data analysis using python
Experience applying metabolomics methods to studying soils
Demonstrated experience integrating metabolomics with BOTH metagenomics AND metatranscriptomics
Experience analyzing mass spectrometry data for targeted and untargeted analysis including MS/MS interpretation for identification of metabolites.
Previous peer-reviewed publications in the field of mass spectrometry and/ or soil metabolomics, with strong demonstrated ability in writing, analysis and preparation of figures for presentations and publication
Experience in mass spectrometry, cell culture, soils, analytical chemistry, wet lab work, development of novel protocols
Demonstrated experience applying technical, scientific and engineering principles to evaluate and design new manual mass spectrometry protocols and develop new workflows.
Strong motivation to contribute to the development of the areas of research under the DOE mission.
Keep precise and detailed records and laboratory notebooks.
Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills with the ability to provide resolutions to technical problems of complex scope.
Ability to successfully work independently and interact collaboratively with staff at all levels of the organization.
Excellent and effective interpersonal, communication and presentation skills with the ability to summarize experimental results and present at group meetings.
Additional Desired Qualifications:
PhD degree and post-doctoral experience in Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Bioengineering or related discipline.
Relevant and strong publication record.
The posting shall remain open until the position is filled.
Notes: This is a 1 year, term appointment with the possibility of renewal and with the possibility of conversion to career.
This position requires completion of a background check.
