We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Scientific Programmer. In this role, the successful candidate The Institute for Computational Medicine (ICM) is a newly established Institute at NYU Langone Medical Center that aims to answer the most pressing biological and medical questions using computational approaches and analysis. We are recruiting one part time employee (~20 hours per week) to serve as a computer programmer and IT support staff for the Institute under the direction of the Institute Director, Dr. Itai Yanai. Job Responsibilities: -Support the research program of the ICM and coordinate computer systems work for the Institute across the NYU Langone Medical Center ecosystem. -develop, test, install and configure scientific software to allow for computational analysis of large and diverse data sets. -set up, maintain, and manage computer servers that will run computational analysis. -program in multiple environments. -develop, run, and teach pipelines for next-generation sequence analysis. -provide written and oral documentation of work. Minimum Qualifications: -To qualify you must have a BA/BS in Computer Science, Biology, Mathematics, Economics, or another discipline that employs computational techniques. 2+ years prior experience as a programmer; formal training in computer science is not required. -Programming skills in Python (Preferably), R or Matlab. -Familiarity with LINUX/UNIX environment. -Ability to work both independently and as part of a team. -Strong communication skills. -Strong interest in big data analysis. -Ability to meet deadlines. Preferred Qualifications: -Prior experience undertaking exploratory data analysis and statistical analysis. -Prior experience working in an academic/university setting. -Prior experience working in a high performance computing environment. -Background in the life sciences (a basic understanding of biology). -Prior experience analyzing high throughput sequencing data. -Familiarity with genome databases (Ensembl, UCSC genome browser, NCBI). -Bioinformatics experience with Next Generation sequencing tools/pipelines (Samtools, bedtools, RNA-Seq). Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.
