Job Description:

Monsanto is passionate about using science and technology to improve agriculture. Monsanto scientists are conducting their search and development (R&D) to revolutionize plant breeding and biotechnology. The Genome Analytics team within Enabling Technology works directly with the Biotech project teams to develop solutions that enable researchers to make well-informed and faster decisions using data from a diversity of functional teams and external collaborators. Candidates that have a strong background in software development skills with several years of industry experience including analysis, design, development, testing, build management, deployment, documentation and customer support are highly desired for this position. The candidate should have extensive experience with development of commercial Linux/Unix based scientific/engineering applications and a strong background in mathematics, statistics, and bioinformatics. Principal focus is in algorithm development and performance improvements typically via code optimization, I/O optimization and cluster or cloud computing. The accepted candidate will join the Visualization & Integration team within Genome Analytics, leveraging their computer science training to play a key role in defining and delivering breakthrough solutions to enable high throughput R&D platforms for Monsanto.

Responsibilities include development of shared tools architecture to provide clean and clear interfaces to software tools for all staff, defined requirements and deployed new departmental R Studio servers & database servers, installation and administration of departmental R Studio, R/Shiny, mysql, postgresdb, apache & tomcat servers, develop training materials for new/recurring staff education on computing environment, i.e. Linux, Perl, LSF, storage administration, application administration, and serve as a liaison to Enterprise IT and TPS for the RUSH pipeline; also support of event selection and advancement in the biotech pipeline based on the RUSH data and enablement of global CNV detection in soy and marker development.

Required Skills

• MS in Computer Science or Computational Biology (or related field)
• Fluency in programming language (Java, C#, or C++, etc.) and scripting language (Perl, python (or iron python), or JavaScript)
• Proficiency working with relational databases (MySQL, Oracle, PostgreSQL)
• Proficiency working with computer clusters (LSF, SGE, etc.)
• Proficiency in working OS platforms Linux, MacOs, Windows, Solaris

Desired Skills

• Proficiency working with noSQL databases, preferably Hadoop
• Familiarity with cloud compute and services, preferably AWS
• Familiarity with common statistical packages e.g., MatLab, SAS, S-plus, R or similar)
• Familiarity with version control tools: Subversion, git, RCS, Continuus/CM
• Experience working in the agricultural industry is a plus
