Job Description:
Scientist Bioinformatics (Computational Biology) The position is being created to strengthen the Microbiology & Industrial Biotechnology Research and embedded in the Modeling Research Team in Tarrytown, NY. The team is an integral part of BASF’s global research center and works closely with other BASF teams from R&D and business, inside and outside the US. To evaluate new approaches and to explore new applications, the team establishes and maintains collaborations with non-BASF partners, incl. universities and other research organizations. We trust in rational decisions. Therefore we work on a solid understanding of the underlying mechanisms. We focus on high impact application fields. Here we are the preferred partner for modeling and optimization. In North-America we act as a driver of a strong regional modeling community and share expertise among the regions. With our partners, we develop reliable models, use comprehensive methods and deliver optimized results. The Scientist Bioinformatics (Computational Biology) will develop and apply computational tools to assist with strain development for the production of bio-based chemicals. Communicating the ideas and solutions of bioinformatics and acting as a driving force in interdisciplinary project teams will be a key success-factor. Major Responsibilities

  • Collect, analyze and compare genome-wide next generation sequencing data (including assembly, annotation, variance identification and data curation) to recommend strain improvement strategies
  • Use transcriptomic and metabolomic network data for additional guidance
  • Develop, apply and evaluate new software solutions and web applications to manage data flood and turn it to meaningful actionable items
  • Actively participate in cross functional teams for product development (incl. bench scientists)
  • Work with global bioinformatics team to establish and incorporate existing tools into the North America Microbiology & Industrial Biotechnology lab
Education
  • Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Biochemical Engineering, Biochemistry or related discipline
  • Working knowledge of computational programs such as Operating Systems (e.g. UNIX, LINUX, Windows); Scripting languages (e.g. Perl, Python, Bash, Tcl); Programming languages (e.g. Java, C/C++); Biology related software for data mining
Know-How
  • Strong expertise in bacterial, yeast or fungal systems
  • Understanding of what genomes are, what they do, and how they are relevant to genetic engineering
  • Thorough knowledge of research principles and techniques in strain engineering, microbial metabolic pathways, and microbial physiology
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Soft Skills
  • Self-starter and ability to work independently with minimal supervision and under strict timelines
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal communication skills
  • Willingness and ability to travel internationally
Desired
  • Experience working in an industrial lab or postdoctoral training
  • Experience in
    • systems biology
    • protein sequence activity relationship to address structural bioinformatics
    • molecular biology techniques for bacteria and yeast
    • rational or random strain evolution principles
    • computational protein design
  • Ability to manage and steer research projects
