Job Description:
The Texas A&M University System (System) and Texas A&M University (University) invite nominations and applications for the position of Vice Chancellor for Agriculture and Life Sciences and Dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. This individual provides visionary leadership for agricultural programs in the University and the statewide System. The Dean for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences serves Texas A&M University and the Vice Chancellor provides oversight for four statewide System agriculture agencies (Agencies) that include Texas A&M AgriLife Research, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, Texas A&M Forest Service, and Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory. The ideal candidate will have the vision, skills and experience to lead complex organizations and to develop and enhance the academic, research, technology, service, and extension missions of the organizations to serve the State of Texas and the nation as a premier Land Grant program in the United States.

Leadership:

The roles of the Vice Chancellor and Dean include excellence in:

• Leading the multiple missions of the College and Agencies to enhance the quality of all programs and provide visionary guidance, strategic direction, and promotion of excellence in the College

• Serving as a state and national leader and spokesperson for agriculture, life sciences and the Land Grant system

• Developing collaborative goals, objectives and plans with other System institutional administrators that will ensure educational and program excellence, student service and representation of Texas agriculture and life sciences interests that lead to growth in stature and financial support of System agriculture and life sciences programs

• Expanding relationships with external rural and urban constituencies including agricultural industries, public agencies, and professional associations

• Furthering the diversity of faculty, staff, researchers, and students of the College and the Agencies

• Providing academic and administrative leadership for all academic programs and matters related to faculty and students for the College

• Fostering an environment that protects academic freedom and stimulates scholarly and professional activity for the faculty and staff

• Raising funds and extramural support to significantly expand the economic foundations of the College and Agencies

• Recruiting, selecting, and supervising four Agency directors, College administrators and Department heads and evaluating their performance in accordance with applicable rules and procedures

• Encouraging and supporting interdisciplinary, multi-agency, and multi-national appointments and collaborations to best serve multiple constituencies including students, faculty and staff, external groups, governmental and legislative entities, natural resource management and conservation organizations, and other key clientele groups

• Coordinating activities with the other academic deans and university leadership to achieve goals within the broad University mission

• Coordinating Federal and State legislative agendas of the Agencies

• Implementing policies and supporting goals of the Board of Regents, the System Chancellor, and the University President

• Representing the System and Chancellor on agricultural matters and advancing mutually support national and international relationships and activities of the College, Agencies, and System members with state, national, and global partners

Opportunity, Quality, Excellence:

The Vice Chancellor and Dean administers funds of approximately $468 million per year. The College has an annual budget of approximately $53 million, fourteen academic Departments, over 340 tenured and tenure-track faculty, 31 majors, 6400 undergraduate students, and 1300 graduate students. The combined agencies have an annual budget of approximately $415 million, about 3500 employees and facilities throughout the state that fulfill key parts of the land grant mission including extension, research, teaching, and service. As Vice Chancellor the finalist will report to the Chancellor of the Texas A&M University System and as Dean will report to the Provost and Executive Vice President of Texas A&M University.
