Job Description:
HealthTell, Inc is a well-funded, venture-backed start-up developing a breakthrough medical diagnostic platform that leverages the body’s immune system to enable early detection and monitoring of a wide range of chronic diseases. Our proprietary peptide microarrays provide a snapshot of a patient’s antibody repertoire at a given time. Circulating antibodies are naturally amplified by the immune system and reflect the body’s response to diseases, including infections, cancer, autoimmune diseases and Alzheimer’s disease. HealthTell will accurately diagnose diseases using its proprietary immunosignaturing approach with a single, minimally invasive test, and monitor disease progression and therapeutic response over time. The technology has great potential for application in many areas such as diagnosis, patient selection, disease monitoring, and therapeutic R&D. Position Description The Bioinformatics Scientist will use machine learning approaches to develop the algorithms that drive HealthTell’s diagnostic products. They will perform basic research to elucidate how immunosignatures relate to disease state and how to optimize the design of the peptide arrays, assay conditions and data processing to improve sensitivity and specificity. They will help design clinical trials, use biostatistics to interpret the data and publish the results. They will develop methods to monitor product quality and translate exciting research results into robust, profitable products that meet clinical needs and regulatory requirements. This is an opportunity to join a fast growing start up with huge potential on the ground floor and make an impact quickly. Responsibilities: Apply machine learning to develop classification algorithms for early diagnosis of cancer, autoimmune- or infectious diseases from patterns of antibodies present in a patient’s blood. Work with our engineers and researchers to use Design of Experiments to guide optimization of peptide-array synthesis and assay conditions. Collaborate on the development of software and hardware platforms, bioinformatics tools, and information management systems for research informatics. Use statistical analysis techniques to characterize and improve performance, and to link antibody measurements to clinical outcomes and underlying biology. Collaborate with researchers in pharma and academia to design and execute clinical trials, both retrospective and prospective, to explore novel diagnostic applications of Immunosignatures. Support publication and presentation of the analytic results. Required - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: Strong analytical, problem-solving, and conceptual skills, with a solid understanding of statistical principles. Expertise in developing classification algorithms in the context of diagnostic tests. Extensive experience with statistical and software development tools and technologies, R and/or Python strongly preferred. Experience working with relational databases, particularly Postgres. Solid teamwork and interpersonal skills; ability to focus on projects to see them through to completion in a timely manner. Strong communication and documentation skills. Basic knowledge of molecular sciences and genomics/proteomics. Enthusiasm for working in a fast moving collaborative environment. Required – Education and Experience: PhD in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Statistics, Mathematics or related discipline. Five years of relevant experience. Desired – Additional Qualifications: Experience analyzing high-density microarrays of any type Experience with protein/peptide sequence analysis Knowledge of immunology and/or oncology. Experience optimizing antibody assays. Familiarity with NumPy, SciPy, and Pandas Experience with clinical trial design.
