Job Description:
Responsibilities: The Senior Bioinformatics Scientist oversees the analysis and management of high throughput data generated by Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) or high throughput arrays for the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Infectious Diseases.

The individual will work closely with other UCLA scientists, physicians, bioinformatics analysts and biostatisticians to provide customized solutions for a broad variety of biological experiments in the area of infectious diseases and general medicine. This person wil assist with managing, analyzing, and interpreting data generated by parallel detection systems used in genomics, transcriptomics, microbiomics, metabolomics, and metagenomics. The successful candidate will implement both software and hardware applications/systems supporting scientific data work-flow processes and develop pipelines. He/she also provides research suppot to investigators and assists in training investigators and new users to use bioinformatics applications and databases.

The Senior Bioinformatics Scientist participates in the bioinformatics group's independent research and assists in preparing and submitting manuscripts for publication. He/She also plays a leadership role in recruiting and managing junior bioinformatics analysts and scientists. The incumbent independently prioritizes assignments and completes ongoing tasks. Other assignments are made by the Principal Investigator(s) on a project basis, and the incumbent is frequently expected to use his/her own judgment to determine the most appropriate and efficient method of completing the analyses and preparing manuscripts.

Qualifications

Required: Bachelors degree in bioinformatics or equivalent; Minimum of three years of hands-on experience in life science data, genomics and computation; Demonstrated ability to solve biologically-relevant problems requiring novel applications of exploratory data analysis; Experience with next-generation sequencing (NGS) data; Proficient in scripting languages: python, perl or Java. Proficient with R (non-coursework related) and relational databases; Knowledge of microarray and NGS data management and analysis (MySQL). Knowledge of genomic database resources. Knowledge of hardware including server, networks, etc. Ability to prepare formal statistical analysis plans for research studies. Ability to synthesize statistical and bioinformatics results into graphic and written form. Supervisory and communication skills to direct work of back-up data entry personnel to ensure integrity of data entry process of various projects in a timely manner. Ability to interperet clinical and medical variables as they apply to the analysis. Experience in statistical software STATA/SAS data management and manipulation of large data sets. Experience with medical and biomedical terminology and research.

Preferred: PhD degree in bioinformatics or equivalent; Knowledge of genomic database resources at NCBI, EMBL.
