Job Description:
The computational biology team at Freenome plays a key role in integrating our unique laboratory technology and novel machine learning efforts by supporting assay and model development and transforming raw data into maximally useful forms for machine learning. As a computational biologist in assay development at Freenome, you will be an integral part of our R&D team, working in collaboration with molecular biologists to develop new assay technologies measuring human health to produce data for our machine learning engine, driving Freenome’s mission of early detection and intervention in human disease. As a computational biologist in assay development at Freenome, you will be an integral part of our R&D team, working in collaboration with molecular biologists to develop new assay technologies measuring human health to produce data for our machine learning engine, driving Freenome’s mission of early detection and intervention in human disease. Responsibilities:
- Develop new assay technologies in collaboration with molecular biologists to optimize signal recovery, reliability, and COGS on a variety of assays and analytes.
- Develop novel bioinformatics workflows and take them from prototyping in R&D to production in a high-throughput environment.
- PhD (or equivalent research experience) in computational biology, bioinformatics, cancer biology, genomics, or a related field
- Extensive experience working with raw next-generation sequencing data in collaboration with molecular biologists to develop new molecular assays
- Deep knowledge of analysis and QC procedures for development of new NGS-based molecular assays.
- Proficiency in at least one general-purpose programming language: Python, Java, C++, etc.
- Proficiency in a scientific data processing ecosystem: R, Python/Numpy, etc
- Knowledge of statistics as applied to assay development and evaluation: significance testing, Bayes’ theorem, application of basic probability distributions used in computational biology.
- Skilled at clearly communicating scientific results with a team and working collaboratively towards next steps
- 3+ years postdoctoral work in academia or equivalent industry experience demonstrating success in leading development projects.
- Bench experience: you’ve analyzed data you generated.
- Experience working with NGS data beyond diploid germline DNA-seq: cfDNA, RNA-seq, single-cell sequencing, metagenomics, epigenomics, etc
- Experience working with non-NGS based assay development: PCR and proteomic technologies
- Experience with software engineering best practices: code quality, testing, performance optimization, development of research tools infrastructure.
- Experience implementing bioinformatics workflows in traditional HPC like SGE, SLURM, LSF, PBS, etc.
- Experience implementing bioinformatics workflows in cloud-/container-based environments like AWS, Google Cloud, Docker, Kubernetes
