Job Description:
The University of Washington Medical Center - Health Sciences Center has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time Senior Computer Specialist primarily supporting bioinformatics for clinical next-generation sequencing assays. In this position, the candidate will help maintain and expand our national leadership in developing next generation sequencing technology for patient care. The selected candidate will perform analysis and development work in a state-of-the art clinical laboratory, working closely with faculty and staff. We are looking for candidates with strong Python programming skills.

General Job Duties Include:

-Develop next-generation sequencing data analysis pipelines. Function as a software engineer to author new software and maintain existing software. Execute applications to support clinical testing. Work on existing pipelines and create new platforms. Bioinformatics pipelines are developed locally. Next generation sequencing, primarily Illumina platform.

-Develop next generation applications, including nucleic acid sequencing, in the clinical microbiology laboratory.

-Maintenance of software pipelines for data analysis (i.e., maintaining our customized environment, software, and infrastructure for performing analyses). Every application in the area has a development and maintenance pipeline, these duties will be shared with the other programmers.

-Design and construction of databases for storing and querying laboratory and clinical data. Create new databases, maintain existing databases, primarily SQL.

-Design and construction of web-based decision support tools providing interpretive information for health care providers.

-Development of applications to support clinical laboratory workflow. Integration of data from the laboratory system, clinical laboratory, and analytical pipelines. Help support accurate record-keeping. Organize data for interpretation.

-Other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

-BS in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Applied Math, or related discipline OR extensive professional experience in software design and/or development of Bioinformatics.

-AND 1 year of the following:

-Fluency in Python is required, although less experienced candidates with extensive expertise in other programming languages will be considered.

-Experience developing software using modern tools and procedures for version control, unit testing, documentation, and code review.

-Experience with Linux or other Unix-like environments.

-Fluency with SQL.

-Experience with manipulation and analysis of large data sets.

-Experience with commonly used software tools for biological sequence analysis.

-Excellent spoken and written communication and documentation skills.

-Basic understanding of molecular biological concepts.

-Knowledge of next-generation sequencing principles.

-Experience with molecular biology and clinical microbiology.

-Wet-bench experience performing PCR and sequencing-based assays.

-Experience with molecular diagnostics.

DESIRED:

-Masters in Computer Science, Engineering, or related discipline.

-Experience with commonly used software tools for biological sequence analysis.

-Skills with LINUX/UNIX system administration.

-Formal training in Bioinformatics or Statistics.

-Fluency in SQL.

-Experience with cloud computing services such as Amazon AWS.

-Experience in development of or contribution to open source projects.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:

-May need to work holidays and weekends.

-Lab Medicine employees may be required to work in any of the department locations including but not limited to HMC, UWMC, Roosevelt, SCCA, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, SCH, the Rosen Building, etc.

-Will be considered essential staff and as such will be required to report to work when scheduled despite inclement weather.
