Institute for Translational Medicine and Therapeutics
Senior Data Science Engineer
Salary Range: £53,160 - £61,000 p.a.
The Institute for Translational Medicine and Therapeutics (ITMAT) within the NIHR Imperial Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) supports the acceleration of fundamental discoveries into improvements in human health and economic benefit. ITMAT includes platforms in genomic sequencing, metabolic phenotyping, bioresources, imaging technologies and health informatics. ITMAT supports studies across a broad range of translational clinical medicine, and postgraduate programmes at the interface of basic and clinical sciences. It promotes multidisciplinary research, pulling through biomedical applications from engineering and physical sciences and strategic commercial partnerships. Through integrated and innovative approaches from science to medicine we will transform medical practice through the application of powerful computational techniques.
We are seeking to recruit a cadre of leaders in Data Science to support the informatics requirements of ITMAT, as well as individual research programmes through integrating skills to create a critical mass of expertise. The focus of this talent pool will be on solving complex scientific problems through computation, including the efficient application of existing approaches, the integration of software and hardware architectures, the development and application of new methods and the production of sustainable software. There will be close collaboration with experimental groups to maximise knowledge deduced from complex multivariate data, leveraging the rich inter-disciplinary collaborative environment that is a feature of research at Imperial College. This will offer a diverse and fascinating mix of technologies and areas of science and engineering while allowing team-based combinations of expertise to solve complex problems in software and algorithm design, data analysis and visualisation.
This post is available for 5 years on a full time basis at our South Kensington campus. The successful applicant will take up a post in one of two categories:
Focus on specific scientific projects with a string affiliation to the ITMAT core software technologies development group;Focus on the core software technologies development group with responsibility for design, sustainability and delivery of software solutions across the broad range of scientific activities.Appointments will be based on the track record and/or research excellence in your field of expertise. We will look to appoint from those with a background in numerical sciences (e.g. physics, mathematics, bioinformatics) or in Computing that wish to apply their expertise to understanding the aetiology, pathogenesis, pathways and mechanisms of chronic human disease.
The job environment will offer a career structure across the Faculty of Medicine for applicants who have a deep interest in fundamental scientific challenges and the development of high quality sustainable software and algorithms to solve diverse patient orientated problems. Individual career ambitions will be appreciated and the successful candidate will choose a career path consistent with obtaining an academic position or, alternatively, as a key software development engineer within the Division.
