Job Description:
We are looking for a Senior DevOps Engineer to help us develop next-generation systems management and application delivery processes. This role will join the Systems and Infrastructure team and support the various Harvard Catalyst informatics projects as well as the Football Players Health Study and the SHRINE ACT projects.

In this role you will:

  • Work closely with software engineers to develop scalable and maintainable application architectures
  • Help maintain the software delivery tool chain (e.g. source code management, ticketing system, continuous integration/deployment environment, etc.)
  • Help design and manage both on-premise and cloud-based infrastructure
  • Help automate everything!
  • Contribute to the open source community

The Senior DevOps Engineer should have experience with the following technologies and responsibilities:
  • GNU/Linux systems administration (e.g. RHEL, CentOS, Debian)
  • Scripting (e.g. sh/bash, Python, Ruby, etc.)
  • Source code management systems (e.g. Git, Subversion, etc.)
  • Virtualization and containers (e.g. QEMU/KVM, Vagrant, Docker, Packer, etc.)
  • Configuration management systems (e.g. Ansible, SaltStack, Puppet, Chef, etc.)
  • Hardware (e.g. servers, storage, networking)
  • Amazon Web Services
  • Leveraging open source solutions
  • Tuning and troubleshooting complex systems
  • General networking skills (e.g. layer 2/3 switching, TCP/IP, firewalls, etc.)
  • Monitoring (e.g. Zabbix, Ganglia, CloudWatch, etc.)
  • Backups (e.g. rdiff-backup, duplicity, etc.)
  • Protected data and compliance (e.g. PII/PHI, HIPAA, etc.)
Experience in any of the following areas is a plus:
  • Java and Ruby application frameworks (e.g. Spring, Rails, etc.)
  • Relational and NoSQL databases (e.g. MySQL/MariaDB, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, etc.)
  • Atlassian tools (e.g. Jira, Bamboo, Stash/Bitbucket, Confluence, etc.)
  • Automated testing (e.g. Selenium )
  • Infrastructure management and orchestration (e.g. CloudFormation, Terraform)
  • Load balancing, scaling and high availability
  • Secrets management (e.g. Vault)
  • Container clustering (e.g. Docker Swarm, Apache Mesos, Kubernetes)
  • Scientific research
  • Bioinformatics software development
  • Management of large data sets
  • Medical informatics or health care data management
Basic Qualifications:

BA/BS in computer science, information technology, or equivalent relevant experience. 5+ years of experience in software development and operations environments.

Strong systems administration, configuration management and scripting/automation skills are a must. Open source, AWS, and source code management experience. Networking, firewalls, NAT and packet filtering experience desired. Experience with storage systems: SAN and NAS including iSCSI, NFS, and FC. Excellent communication skills and ability to manage competing priorities. Participate in a 24x7 on-call rotation. This position will require occasional night and weekend work. Other duties as required.

Additional Information:

This is a grant-funded position through March 31, 2019.

This posting is a grade 58 and does not require as much competence and experience as the requirements listed on Requisition #44161BR, Principal DevOps Engineer, grade 59. Only one of these requisitions will be filled. The grade will depend on the incumbent's skills and experience.
