Job Description:
The Senior Director of Bioinformatics is responsible for the overall requirements definition, design, development and deployment of bioinformatics systems in support of laboratory testing and research that are beyond the scope and capabilities of the standard Information Technology functions to adequately support.

The individual provides guidance (technical) to the department and supervises 15-30 people, as required. The Senior Director of Bioinformatics reports to the VP,Informatics, Analytics & BI and dotted line to the VP, Development.

Job Accountabilities

General:

1. Provide expert scientific guidance in the design and maintenance of algorithms and interpretation systems for genotyping assays, such as viral genotyping.

2. Develop, maintain and utilize in-house sequencing databases in support of assay interpretation and quality control systems.

3. Develop and maintain bioinformatics systems, including specialized LIMS systems in the laboratory, when such systems are beyond the expertise, qualifications and resources provided by the Information Technology function.

4. Liaison with bioinformatics systems vendors (approved by legal) who provide the systems used in our assays and reports.

5. Develop and deploy management reports derived from laboratory databases and deploy in the lab for use by operations staff in assay quality control and workflow.

6. Provide discussion of assay data and interpretation systems for CLS utilizing bioinformatics systems and interpretation algorithms for analysis and resulting.

7. Provide discussion of assay data and technical interpretation systems for clients via personal interaction.

Lab Management:

1. Aid in ensuring bioinformatics assay components and interpretation systems are in compliance with all applicable local, state and federal licensing regulations.

2. Responsible for encouraging staff to reach the highest level of professional standards through participation in scientific meetings, workshops and in-house lectures. Utilize Academic Associates as resources.

3. Quality control, training and departmental oversight (technical) for bioinformatics components of genotyping, sequencing and other high complexity assays.

Scientific:

1. Aid Laboratory/Medical Director and other department directors to develop and implement short and long range, medical and scientific objectives for assigned departments.

2. Responsible for the on-going research and development of bioinformatics tools and systems to enable and support new assays, troubleshooting and/or improvements of informatics for current assays.

3. Participate in the formulation and coordination of sales and marketing objectives and programs as required.

4. Liaison to scientific community and biotechnology industry.

Job Requirements:

1. M.D. and/or Ph.D. degree, in Life Sciences, Bioinformatics, or related field with in-depth knowledge of a discipline related to clinical medicine

2. Requires a minimum of fifteen (15) years’ progressive laboratory experience including at least eight (8) years of increasingly greater managerial responsibilities.

3. Knowledge and working experience in human disease biology

4. Strong communication skills and a successful track record of collaborating with cross-functional scientific teams

5. Experience in machine learning algorithms and their application to biological problems

6. Experience integrating publicly or commercially available genetic, genomic, and pathway/network datasets with novel experimental data

7. Extensive programming experience pertinent to analysis of large and diverse data sets. Knowledge of one or more of UNIX, R, C/C++, Java, Perl/Python, MySQL.

8. Familiarity with Java/C/C++ platforms is a plus.

9. Demonstrated skill in prioritizing multiple responsibilities and tasks, excellent organizational skills.

10. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
