Job Description:
Are you a hands-on engineering director who loves leading teams of talented professionals building clinical grade SaaS solutions? We are looking for a director of software development and bioinformatics to join our Genomics division and lead our development efforts. You will work with the software and bioinformatics development teams to design, develop and launch innovative algorithms and software solutions to support the analysis and interpretation of genomic test results and drive precision medicine.

You are self-motivated and able to lead a team to solve complex challenges in a collaborative and international environment. You thrive in and help drive a fast-paced environment. You have experience with complex enterprise or SaaS software, ideally in a regulated environment, have worked with agile software development processes, have a passion for quality, and possess strong communications skills. You will report to the General Manager and will be based in Leuven, Belgium or Santa Clara, CA.

Responsibilities:

As Senior Director of Software Development, you will:

  • Manage the overall performance and successful project/program delivery of software development projects; ensuring results and meeting agreed on scope, cost, schedule and quality objectives
  • Manage multiple project teams and oversee all aspects of the software development lifecycle (SDLC) including estimation, sprint planning, requirements gathering, architecting, developing, testing, issue/risk management, change control and delivery
  • Collaborate with business and product leadership in evolving vision for precision medicine solutions and technologies that drive customer value, efficiency and productivity
  • Provide clear and consistent project status communications; produce executive level presentations and represent the software development team in various forums
  • Develop and maintain project standards, process, documentation, including project plans, agendas, action items, and deliverables in adherence with project management standards and best practices
  • Ensure development teams can execute on time and on budget
  • Collaborate with other team members to establish standards and to develop the roadmap to achieve the desired architecture
  • Conduct formal design reviews with project and core teams
  • Mentor team members by providing career development goals, professional development and driving continuous improvement
  • Budget, track and forecast spend, evaluate new technologies and development efforts (make vs buy decisions)
  • Drive the creation and implementation of automated testing frameworks that reduce QA cycles and increase team velocity
  • Build out a solid, diversified software team by attracting and recruiting top talent across a variety industries and skillsets
  • Engage an evidence-based view of marketplace and customer to develop product roadmaps, in concert with product management team
  • Engage internal partners to assess potential acquisitions and partnerships
  • Partner with the field selling organization to address customer trends and challenges, and drive deeper sales enablement
  • Exercise human-centered design principles to deliver best-in-class usability in our products

Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computational Biology, Engineering, or Computer Science with an understanding of the analytical and biological sciences
  • 7+ years’ in a leadership role in software architecture, design and development
  • Experienced manager, having directly developed, driven and maintained high performance teams
  • Experience in biotech, healthcare, life sciences and/or regulated environments a plus
  • Demonstrated experience with all phases of the SDLC and Agile software development practices
  • Experience working cross-functionally and with other divisions, business units, and companies
  • Experience with AI, big data approaches, new UI technologies, and HL7 a plus
  • Exposure to selecting, defining and implementing architectural standards for front- and back-end development
  • Experience in presenting design and code reviews
  • Highly effective analytical, negotiation, facilitation and consensus building skills
  • Removes barriers and acts with an appropriate sense of urgency
  • Excellent interpersonal, listening, oral and written communication skills
  • Strong focus on quality, accuracy and attention to details
  • Demonstrable ability to interact effectively with people at all levels from multiple areas of the company
  • Ability to work in Leuven, Belgium or Santa Clara, CA full time, relocating if necessary
  • Ability to travel, up to 25% time, both domestic and international
