Job Description:
The Senior Informatician will provide expert guidance and support the planning and execution of computational research and bioinformatics projects, strengthen cross-functional matrix ways of working, and drive the strategic advancement of our Research Data Science capabilities. This role will operate from a central group orientation and is intended to make significant contributions in elevating our computational-bioinformatic-scientific team-work, process and methods, life-cycle and tools for understanding biological data. The Sr. Informatician will establish centralized goals and objectives for Research bioinformatics staff in partnership with Research line managers to advance common ways of working and drive overall effectiveness to achieve outcomes.

Key responsibilities:

  • Provide scientific computing wisdom, expertise and guidance to computational researchers and bioinformaticians, scientists, and line leaders in the plan, design, execution and interpretation of biologic data
  • Through a scientific computing lens, lead the computational-bioinformatic evaluation, implementation and roll-out of enterprise tools, data sources, best practices, methods, life-cycle approaches, and TBD advanced solutions to elevate our bioinformatic analytic capabilities (people, process and technology)
  • Hands-on execute any bioinformatic projects in support of broad Research goals, as assigned
In addition to Research staff, this role will partner with internal and external centralized software engineers, data engineers, data architects, project managers, data stewards and governance resources to deliver on a strategic enterprise vision around integrated bioinformatics data insight in support of line functions, who make meaning of the data.

The Senior Informatician must be at ease shifting through project execution, mentoring of senior and junior staff, matrix structures, and the stand up of new centralized enterprise capabilities to better achieve analytic outcomes. The role will be highly visible, and therefore is expected to positively impact the overall execution of Research Data Science projects and delivery of enterprise capabilities.

Qualifiactions and Experience:

  • Masters degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Information Technology or related field or equivalent postgraduate experience, preferably in a laboratory science environment
  • Extended experience in Next Generation Sequencing-RNA seq data analysis and other bioinformatics tools
  • Expert in single and multi-mode deep biologic data analysis and interpretation
  • Able to proactively seek collaborations with scientists and lab heads
  • Strong initiative, excellent interpersonal and communication (written and oral) skills
  • Strong influencing skills, and desire to effect positive change across several functions
  • Expertise in algorithmic implementation, statistical programming and multi-mode data manipulation
  • Familiar with specialized commercial and open source data visualization and analysis tools
  • Solid understanding of bioinformatics-computational experimental design
  • Deep knowledge of cancer genomic data sources and data integration-interpretation tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to derive molecular signatures of drug response, such as the application of machine learning techniques to drug response and multi-omics datasets
