Job Description:
Faculty of Engineering

Automatic Control and Systems Engineering (ACSE) is one of the largest departments devoted to the subject in Europe, with 28 academic staff, 43 research staff, 29 professional and support staff and nearly 400 taught and research students.

We are a world leading research department, as evidenced by the results of the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF2014) exercise. Out of 62 UK institutions specialising in multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary engineering, the Department was ranked:

1st for quality of research publications, with 98.5% of our publications assessed as either world leading (41%) or internationally excellent in terms of their originality, significance and rigour;

3rd for overall research quality with 96% of our research being assessed as world leading (44%) or internationally excellent.

We are especially keen to contribute to one or more of the Engineering Grand Challenges identified by the EPSRC in the UK such as: Risk and Resilience, Controlling Cellular Behaviour, Big Data for Engineering, Suprastructures and Engineers at the Heart of Public Decision Making. As well as: Restore and Improve Urban Infrastructure, Engineer Better Medicines and Reverse-Engineer the Brain, which were put forward by the National Academy of Engineering in the US. You are strongly encouraged to apply if you are committed to pursuing theoretical or applied research in systems and control engineering whilst working collaboratively across disciplines to develop solutions to one or more of these topics.

As a Senior Lecturer in ACSE you will expand your already substantial research as well as make a substantial contribution to delivering the research vision and strategy of the Department and Faculty by conducting independent as well as collaborative multidisciplinary research that is internationally competitive. You will also secure research funding from a variety of sources, supervise research students and research staff and publish work in the top journals in the field. As a teacher you will play a key role in maintaining our reputation for high quality teaching through devising, designing, preparing, and delivering research-led taught courses. Your leadership and management abilities will enable you to contribute to the smooth running of the Department, Faculty and University and your high professional standing will reflect our values and strengths, here and abroad.

The Department provides a vibrant and supportive environment in which to carry out your research, teaching and professional activities.
