UNIVERSITY OF EDINBURGH

College of Science and Engineering

School of Geosciences

Senior Research Scientist (NPL) / Lecturer (University of Edinburgh) Greenhouse gases

Are you an innovative researcher, keen to develop metrology research for ground-based remote sensing of greenhouse gases?

For this new joint position you will be a member of both the NPL and the University of Edinburgh, based for 80% of your time at the NPL within the Emissions and Atmospheric Metrology Group (EAMG) and then as part of the School of GeoSciences at the University of Edinburgh within the Global Change Research Institute.

The National Physical Laboratory is a world-leading centre of excellence in developing and applying the most accurate standards, science and technology available. It occupies a unique position as the UK’s National Measurement Institute, at the intersection of scientific discovery and real world application. Its expertise and original research have underpinned quality of life, innovation and competitiveness for UK citizens and business for more than a century.

The EAMG at NPL has a strong international profile, delivering research via the UK’s National Measurement System, technical R&D, and services in the fields of emissions detection and quantification. NPL’s work in this field has a large impact on various industrial sectors including oil and gas (including shale gas extraction and the gas grid), agriculture, carbon capture and storage and landfill. This work is a critical component of the high-profile Centre for Carbon Measurement that links with policy-makers, industry and the media to increase the impact and profile of the science being done at NPL.

The University of Edinburgh is a vibrant, research-led community and the School of GeoSciences has world-class researchers in GHG and air quality. School academics lead two of the three NERC-funded projects that will help quantify the magnitude and uncertainty of UK emissions of CO2, CH4 and N2O. Using advanced statistical techniques they integrate information from ground-based, aircraft, shipborne, and satellite measurements.

You must have a strong track record of high-impact publications and (preferably) research funding in making and interpreting ground-based measurements of GHG. You can attract excellent students and can form effective partnerships to increase the breadth of scientific applications and to drive high-quality publication outputs.
