Job Description:
Position Summary
Under guidance from the Chairman of the Department of Genetic Medicine and in collaboration with the Department of Computational Biology, Cornell University, Ithaca, the Sr. Scientific Programmer will perform the roles of Programmer, Biocurator, Analysis Pipeline and Software Developer, Data Analyst and Instructor/Facilitator for various projects and multiple investigators within the Department of Genetic Medicine.
Position Activities
Manages and organizes new data (next-generation genome and exome sequencing, microarray genotypes, RNA-Seq, microRNA expression, DNA methylation). Builds pipelines for the efficient processing of these data. Performs quality control and manages access, naming, organization and transfer/sharing of data, and will assist other researchers with the analysis of such data.
Converts data formats and processes data by developing scripts in C, Java, Python and R code. Develops pipelines using available bioinformatics and related processing software including writing code to connect varying components, and developing code for downstream visualization and access of data, including but not limited to building databases, genome browsers, and managing data outputs of varying types.
Evaluates options for processing raw next-generation sequencing and RNA-Seq data to analyzable outputs, basic statistical and bioinformatics software enabled analysis of data, and produces visualization plots for presentations and publications.
Creates “How to” wiki's and documents for data processing and analysis and trains researchers in use of user friendly genomics analysis packages including but not limited to Partek, GeneSpring, STRUCTURE and Sequenom.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor's Degree required. Four plus years related work experience in genomics related fields required.
Ability and desire to learn the relevant aspects of the fields of biomedical research, clinical research, biomedical publications, biomedical intellectual property and academic medical administration are required.
Demonstrate ability to develop proficiency with unfamiliar toolsets required.
Proficiency with current tools for multi-tiered database development, SQL query and reporting, traditional software development tools (e.g. C/C++), Unix system experience (AIX a plus), and various web clients, including MacOS and Windows, is required.
Highly Desired Requirements
Master's Degree preferred.
Specific database administration experience with SQL Server and/or Informix preferred.
Understanding of biomedical data types and complexity would be helpful.
Specific big genomic data handling and analysis experience preferred.
Skill and Abilities
The ability to work with others in a matrix management environment will be critical to the incumbent's success.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
Excellent organization and communication skills.
