The successful applicant will join the VectorBase team at Imperial College London and lead the continued development of the map-based query and data visualisation interface to its population biology database (see www.vectorbase.org). The tool is entirely based on open source components including Leaflet, d3.js, Apache Solr. The role has lots of potential for creative problem solving in complex and high-volume web-based data visualisation. Based at the South Kensington campus of Imperial College London, the Vector ImmunoGenomics and Infection Laboratory (VigiLab) uses both experimental and bioinformatics research techniques to understand mosquito-pathogen interactions as the basis for developing control measures for diseases such as malaria, dengue and Zika. Duties and responsibilities: Deliver new features and bugfixes for the map software for each release using VectorBase’s issue tracking system to plan and assign work as appropriate within the release schedule. Examples of features you will develop may include:
- Interactive timeline plots of vector abundance data
- Visualisation of insecticide resistance genotypes, chromosomal inversion genotypes, microsatellite data, blood meal species identifications, and pathogen infection phenotypes
- Integration of whole-genome genotype data (data from thousands of individually sequenced mosquitoes will be available soon) and visualisation of population structure and gene flow derived from this data
- Integrating the resource with third-party data sources (pathogen distribution, land usage, climate data) to enable display and co-query with VectorBase data
- An important part of your role will be to keep informed about the latest developments within and beyond our software stack so that the map continues to be a highly scalable, flexible and usable tool for our target users.
- Document all major software architecture changes that you introduce in VectorBase’s project management wiki (Confluence).
- Prepare progress reports as required to the project and its funders.
- Work with biologists and curators to understand the data.
- Promote the work via blog posts, social media and scientific publications as appropriate.
- A degree in computer science or software engineering.
- Experience in Software engineering within a team of at least three or more developers
- Experience with Web-based data visualisation with d3.js, p5.js or equivalent libraries
- Experience of working with large datasets
- Experience working with Linux commandline, deploying code and data to remote servers, bash scripting
- Knowledge of Web-based data visualisation with d3.js, p5.js or equivalent libraries
- Demonstrable knowledge of basic statistics
- Web development with JavaScript, HTML and CSS
- Working with revision control and issue tracking systems in a multi-user environment
