Job Description:
Lucigen, now a part of LGC Genomics, has an opportunity for a Sr. Scientist, Bioinformatics to join our dynamic and rapidly expanding team. The Sr. Scientist will engage with a global multi-disciplinary organization to provide knowledge leadership in our sequencing services and product development initiatives. While serving as a key contributor to NGS data analysis, the Sr. Scientist will also participate in driving organizational thinking around bioinformatics and analysis pipeline development to meet roadmap objectives across the entire portfolio in molecular analysis.

The Sr. Scientist, Bioinformatics will have responsibility for providing direction and focus to meet or exceed the LGC Genomics business unit objectives as follows:

Innovation and Product Commercialization:

  • Collaborate with product management and R&D leadership in developing program goals and objectives across the Genomics business unit
  • Serve as cross-functional subject-matter expert in product/pipeline development from feasibility to market launch
  • Collaborate with business and operational leaders to assess new technology and new product or process capabilities, matching them to the needs of the company
  • Contribute to ideation/problem solving to frame key customer problems and propose solutions.
  • Identify collaboration opportunities with universities, research institutions, and start-ups
  • Interact with remote technical teams and production factories to support sequencing services and launching new products
  • Design and plan product, process, or assay development and qualification activities, specifically for NGS product development and custom NGS projects
Scientific Expertise:
  • Bring a deep understanding of bioinformatics, molecular biology, and NGS platforms/products
  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of NGS methods, platform-specific capabilities, and data interpretation
  • Bring a proven record of success in a data production environment: generate, optimize, and maintain scripts for routine NGS data processing
  • Use hands-on experience analyzing and managing large-scale genomic data to achieve business unit objectives
  • Contribute experience with multiple sequencing/molecular analysis systems and technology platforms (ie, NGS, PCR, array)
  • Stay abreast of scientific/technological developments through participation in scientific meetings/seminars and through regular scientific review
Strategic Acumen:
  • Gain alignment to support goals by integrating R&D and other disciplines such as Marketing and Product Management using a partnering and consultative approach
  • Effectively engage as an external liaison with customers to grow new Genomics business opportunities
  • Work across cross-functional teams in Operations to ensure the successful implementation of pipeline development into production environments while meeting all necessary regulatory and quality requirements
Leadership:
  • Build a scalable and flexible data production environment
  • Build domain bench strength and engage associates to optimize output of new commercial content
  • Contribute to a great team and great culture across Genomics business unit
  • Engage peers and network and attract like-minded talent to continue to develop the Genomics organization
  • Inspire, influence, and empower employees across both direct and indirect teams globally
  • Supervise or mentor more junior scientists
  • Provide technical training as needed
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in molecular biology, genetics, bioinformatics, biostatistics, computational biology, or a related field with at least 5 years’ NGS laboratory experience or PhD in bioinformatics and 1-3 years of experience
  • Familiarity with human and mammalian genomics, standard genomic databases (UCSC, EnsEMBL, NCBI), formats, and tools
  • Proficiency in python, ruby, perl, or another high-level scripting language
  • Familiarity with UNIX-based operating systems, shell scripting, and pipeline development
  • Experience in handling databases (MySQL, Oracle) and statistical programming (SAS / R)
  • Experience in building algorithms and/or customizingexisting algorithms for NGS data analysis
  • Hands-on experience with genome alignment, mapping, variant calling and annotation tools
  • Demonstrated passion and enthusiasm for an organization’s vision; strong track record of motivating, leading, and empowering others to achieve organizational goals

  • Aptitude to work in a complex and rapidly growing company
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with analysis of plant genomes
  • Hands-on experience with DNA sequencing library preparation and sequencing on Illumina sequencer
Required experience:
  • NGS laboratory: 5 years
  • handling databases and statistical programming: 2 years
  • building and/or customizing algorithms for NGS analysis: 1 year
