This is a scientific leadership opportunity to drive drug discovery projects through the application and the development of state-of-the-art computer-aided drug design technology. As a key member of interdisciplinary research teams discovering small molecule and biologically-active protein therapies this position will be essential to establishing a hypothesis-centric design culture at Alkermes advancing drug candidates through research and development into the clinic. Role Description: -As a key member of drug discovery teams, you will contribute to the success of small molecule and protein design projects -Through the innovative use of structure-based and ligand-based modeling approaches, you will generate testable hypotheses that influence medicinal chemistry and protein design strategies and synthesis decisions -Derive information, insight, and knowledge from experimental and in silico data through the development and implementation of predictive modeling and cheminformatics approaches -Contribute to the development and implementation of the Modeling & Informatics strategy at Alkermes -Communicate scientific results effectively, internally, as well as in external presentations and publications Key Tasks: -As an active and innovative member of research teams, you will define modeling objectives and deliver creative solutions driving the discovery of novel small molecules and protein therapeutics through inventive design and the imaginative use of molecular modeling and informatics technology -Work closely with medicinal chemists in designing new molecules and provide a framework of predictive models to enable the generation of data driven hypotheses and efficient decision making for the synthesis and advancement of compounds -Influence the building of a computational chemistry framework that enables the streamlining of in silico workflows and technologies -Generate automated and modular calculation engines and computational services that enable team members to seamlessly execute project specific modeling workflows for the exploration and capturing of new design ideas -Propose technology initiatives, and be directly engaged in the development of tools that improve computational chemistry approaches and workflows for small molecule and biologically active protein drug designs and cheminformatics analyses -Work closely with medicinal chemists and IT specialists to find creative solutions to data management, dissemination, and analysis challenges -Identify and evaluate new modeling & informatics technology and software available from commercial sources or through external collaboration opportunities -Participate in new target evaluations through the creative use of structure-based modeling, cheminformatics, and bioinformatics technology Education and Skills: -Ph.D. in computational chemistry; exceptional candidates from related fields such as theoretical physics, computational biology, and computer sciences with relevant chemistry expertise may also be considered -At least 3-5 years of relevant experience in the pharmaceutical industry -Good working knowledge of medicinal and organic chemistry and DMPK principles -Relevant areas of proven expertise include at least one of the following: computation of protein-ligand binding free energies; virtual screening; pharmacophore elucidation; protein-ligand docking and scoring; cheminformatics; predictive modeling and machine learning; Monte-Carlo simulations; molecular dynamics; statistical mechanics applied to biological systems; ab initio calculations; protein design -An outstanding scientific track record in the area of expertise is required; a strong working knowledge in several of the other fields is a plus -A demonstrated intimate understanding of 3D protein-ligand interactions applied to molecular design concepts is desirable. -Experience in applying cheminformatics approaches to solving problems in data mining, implementing new tools, and generating automated workflows using Knime or other workflow tools is highly desirable -A demonstrated expertise in scientific programming (e.g., Python, Java, C, SVL) with practical application of these skills is a strong plus -Experience in bioinformatics and biostatistics is a plus -Excellent oral and written communication skills and good presentation skills are required -Ability to work in a fast-paced, goal-oriented team environment is expected
