Job Description:
The Genomics Institute seeks a Senior Software Engineer to join the highly collaborative Computational Genomics Platform (CGP) and work with a global team of genomics experts on open source solutions to improve the organization and accessibility of genomic data. The CGP uses big data technologies to facilitate genomic research for global health issues such as breast cancer and other genetic risk factors.

This Senior Software Engineer will develop software for Computational Genomics Platform (CGP) to support a number of grants UCSC has received. The most significant project is for supporting a global team to create the Human Cell Atlas, a compendium that maps which genes are active in each cell in the human body. The goal of the project is to create comprehensive reference maps of all human cells - the fundamental units of life - as a basis for both understanding human health and diagnosing, monitoring, and treating disease.

Qualifications / Competencies:

  • Bachelor's degree in biological science, computational / programming, or related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • In-depth knowledge of bioinformatics methods, applications programming, web development and data structures.
  • In-depth knowledge of bioinformatics programming design, modification and implementation.
  • Advanced understanding of relational databases, web interfaces and operating systems.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills in order to work with both technical and non-technical personnel at all levels in the organization, including senior project leadership.
  • Ability to communicate technical information in a clear and concise manner.
  • Advanced ability to interface with management on a regular basis.
  • Ability to lead a team, meet deadlines and demonstrate advanced problem solving skills.
Preferred Qualifications / Competencies:
  • Advanced project management skills.
  • In-depth knowledge of modern biology and applicable field of research.
  • In-depth knowledge of web, application and data security concepts and methods.
