European Molecular Biology Laboratory, in collaboration with the Euro-BioImaging infrastructure and other partners, is developing a strategy for biological reference image data archiving at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI), leading to a new bioinformatics resource. Initially the reference image archive will be a part of the EMBL-EBI's BioStudies database - a new resource at EMBL-EBI for archiving multimodal data. We are looking for a software developer to participate in this work. The successful applicant will develop systems for management of large volumes of image data generated by cutting-edge imaging technologies, including correlative light electron and super-resolution light microscopy and other imaging modalities. The primary tasks will include customization of the existing database for better representation of image data, developing converters between different image formats, and integration with the existing data management systems. The successful candidate will deliver and maintain robust software components and will work in a team with other software engineers, data curators and bioinformaticians working closely with the molecular structure database team that runs and develops the Electron Microscopy Data Bank (EMDB) and the Electron Microscopy Pilot Image Archive (EMPIAR). We expect this activity to grow, and a successful and dedicated candidate will have the opportunity to shape these developments. The post holder will report to the Functional Genomics Development team leader. Qualifications and Experience: Most likely you will have a degree in computer science, mathematics, IT, or a related field. We are looking for people with experience in software development, and interest and, ideally, familiarity with image formats and data. Hands-on experience with protocols and systems for handling TB-size data (e.g., Aspera, UDT, GridFTP, object stores) is desirable. Image analysis, bioinformatics, biology, or life science experience would be an advantage. You should be able to work independently on assigned tasks, as well as in a small team; take initiative as necessary; think independently and creatively; and deliver results on time. An enthusiasm for solving challenging problems is a must. Ability to efficiently communicate with other group members (software developers and biologists) is important. Most of the following skills: -minimum of 3 years' experience in Java programming; J2EE. -minimum of 3 years' experience with database applications and relational databases: SQL, Oracle and/or MySQL. -minimum of 3 years’ experience with UNIX/Linux and shell scripting. -experience with XML and XSLT. -solving database and application scalability problems. -knowledge of team working environments (SCC systems, build automation). -experience with HPC clusters, distributed processing, and/or virtualisation would be an advantage.
