Job Description:
The Computer Science Department at Iowa State University is seeking a full time programmer/analyst to support expansion of an existing open source software package called Tripal (http://tripal.info), which is a set of Drupal modules for maintaining genomic, genetic, and germplasm data in the database schema, Chado. Tripal has a broad user base and national and International impact. This position supports infrastructure for the Legume Federation, an NSF-funded project to build a federation of legume databases, and to assist with development of websites within the federation, the Legume Information System (LegumeInfo.org), PeanutBase (PeanutBase.org) and Soybase (Soybase.org) The work also requires administration of the backend database, which uses the Chado schema, and will include collaborative work with International crop research communities, other database projects, and the Tripal and Chado development communities. Job duties include programming modules for the Drupal PHP Content Management System (CMS), JavaScript, and SQL; integration of UNIX command-line tools within a web-based analytical workflow system; participation in the planning of strategies for collaboration and interoperability between legume databases; and development of tutorials and outreach materials. This position will also mentor undergraduate and graduate student programmers. The successful candidate will possess strong database and web programming skills. Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team are required. Some travel may be expected. Required Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree and 3 years of related experience; OR a Master’s degree and 1 year of related experience. Supplemental Required Education and Experience: -Programming experience - Experience that includes Internet programming, including one or more of CSS, HTML, and Javascript. - Experience with Linux, Unix, and/or Mac OS X. - Experience that includes use of one or more of the following: Python, PHP, Perl, Javascript, or bash shell scripting, or an equivalent scripting language. - Experience with relational databases, proven proficiency with SQL. Preferred Education and Experience: - Experience writing modules in Drupal or another Content Management System (CMS) or a comparable development framework; - Demonstrated knowledge of biology; - Bioinformatics experience; - Experience working with genetic and/or genomic data.
