Software Engineer – ATCC Center for Translational Microbiology – Union, NJ

Job Description:

The ATCC Center for Translational Microbiology (ATCC-CTM) is a newly formed center of excellence in microbiology established by The American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) and the Institute for Life Science Entrepreneurship (ILSE), located on the Kean University campus in Union, NJ. The bioinformatics and data science team is working on exciting new information technologies that can have broad and deep impact on biomedical research and future healthcare.

Position Title: Software Engineer

Location: ILSE BioCenter, in Union, New Jersey

Overall Function: Working together with ILSE/CTM/ATCC scientists, this software engineer will design, develop, implement, and maintain a high-throughput genomics analysis system

Major Responsibilities:

Develop an integrated genomic analysis system with custom code and existing scientific and open-source software tools in a Linux/UNIX environmentDevelop a Web-based management and information retrieval interfaces for the integrated genomic analysis systemDevelop related analysis software tools for desktop applicationsDraft internal scientific report and peer-reviewed publications

Experience & Educational Requirements:

PhD degree, or MS degree with at least 2-year work experience, or BS degree with at least 4-year work experienceDegree(s) in computer science or engineering, information science or engineering, electric engineering, computational biology, bioinformatics, or a related fieldStrong knowledge of data structures, algorithms, operating systems, and/or distributed systemsProficient coding skills (e.g., in Java or C/C++, and Java is the preferred language) are required, as a major part of the job is codingProficiency in working with Linux/UNIX operating systemsPast experience in Web application development using Java Servlet/JSPPast experience in software development

Preferred/Desired Qualifications:

Strong written and oral communication skillsProficient with major NGS, genomics, and bioinformatics tools and resources
