Job Description:
Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, Zymergen is a technology-driven company applying radical new methods to design and improve microbes by rewriting their DNA. This capability allows us to generate novel chemicals, advanced materials, and pharmaceuticals far faster and at lower costs than competing technology. Our approach combines biology, robotic automation, and proprietary computational and analytic methods to industrialize what is otherwise a slow, risky process.

A key element of our success is our ability to apply the latest in software tools, Big Data technology, and machine learning techniques to challenges in chemistry and manufacturing. Zymergen’s software engineering team plays a critical role in distinguishing our products and systems from those developed by our competitors.

Working at Zymergen offers software engineers exposure to a field that makes a difference in the lives of millions of people: low-cost, scalable chemical manufacturing touches everything from how airplanes are built to the frontiers of life-saving medicines. In addition to working at a fast-growing startup and a competitive salary package, you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing you are building a future for our world that was the realm of science fiction just ten years ago.

Responsibilities

Zymergen is hiring software engineers to build the data collection, workflow and analytic components of our platform. Software engineers will join a team including biologists and automation experts designing, building, operating, and continually upgrading an integrated, end-to-end system supporting the automation of DNA design and assembly, microbial testing, and data analysis.

Our primary projects involve:
Tools to enable microbiologists to design and manage collections of new DNA constructs at a greater scale than previously employed in the wet lab environment. A Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) that collects and organizes large volumes of raw and analytic data from a variety of sources and formats, and enables scientists to analyze this information in the context of the genetic designs. Tools to orchestrate the high-throughput workflows that empower our scientific staff to construct and test new microbes at large scale. Powerful machine learning, bioinformatic and analytic tools for modeling genomes, designing DNA, performing quality control and driving experimental analyses. Qualifications/Experience
