Job Description We are seeking to recruit a Software Engineer with experience in complex, scalable systems to join the Functional Genomics Development Team at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) located on the Wellcome Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK.   Reporting to the Functional Genomics Development Team Leader the Software Engineer will be developing the BioStudies database, a new data resources at EMBL-EBI that serves as a generic data archive for biomolecular datasets.  In particular, you will, together with the user interface development project leader, design, implement and maintain the BioStudies data access interface and BioStudies submission tool.  The postholder will build project and domain-specific rendering of study information in BioStudies.  You will also design and implement efficient data integration procedures with other tools and resources at EMBL-EBI and beyond.  As part of a team with other software engineers, data curators and bioinformaticians, you will be able to deliver and maintain reliable and robust software components.  Some European travel may be necessary for this role. EMBL-EBI is part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and it is a world-leading bioinformatics centre providing biological data to the scientific community with expertise in data storage, analysis and representation. EMBL-EBI provides freely available data from life science experiments, performs basic research in computational biology and offers an extensive user training programme, supporting researchers in academic and industry. Qualifications and Experience You will have a degree in computer science, mathematics, IT or a related field along with a strong interest in software engineering and design.   Experience with requirements analysis, design and development of web-based software infrastructures is essential.  Web design experience is preferable.  Bioinformatics, biology or life sciences experience would be a strong advantage.   You will able to work autonomously on assigned tasks, take initiative as necessary and be able to think independently and creatively with an ability to deliver results on time.  An enthusiasm for solving challenging problems is a must.  It is important you are able to work well as part of a small team and are able to communicate effectively with group members, software developers and biologists.   You will have:

  • a minimum of 3 years' experience in Java programming; J2EE;
  • a minimum of 3 years' experience in JavaScript development; knowledge of popular JavaScript frameworks; HTML;
  • experience with database applications, relational databases, XML and XSLT;
  • a minimum of 3 years’ experience with UNIX/Linux and shell scripting;
  • solving database and application scalability problems; and,
  • knowledge of team working environments (SCC systems, build automation).
