Job Description:
We are seeking a talented and driven programmer to join Computational Science and Engineering Group at QCRI. This person will work in a research environment that uses a combination of integrative bioinformatics approaches to study the molecular basis of human disease such as cancer and diabetes. This person will be responsible for the development and maintenance of the backend of a set of bioinformatics resource, as well as other data science tasks. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES • coordinate with scientists to translate proof-of-concept code into production-ready open source packages or web resources • acquire and perform quality control of large data sets from public and controlled-access sources • transform, clean, and reshape large data sets, e.g., using common Linux/UNIX command line utilities • Implement bioinformatics algorithms and pipelines (e.g. mutation calling, alignment, recalibration, etc.) on high performance architectures such as GPU or clusters • interface with the Infrastructure group to ensure the lab’s compliance with security and privacy requirements • train lab staff in computational methods as needed REQUIRED EDUCATION A Master degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. REQUIRED EXPERIENCE • Minimum of 3 years level experience in computer science, software engineering, bioinformatics, or related field • Relevant experience in scientific discipline plus the ability to translate, adapt, and apply this knowledge • Demonstrated experience with Javascript programming • Demonstrated experience with the Linux/UNIX environment as well as shell scripting • Demonstrated experience with at least one scripting language such as Python • Demonstrated experience with at least one compiled language such as C or FORTRAN • Demonstrated experience with revision control software such as git Research at QCRI: QCRI supports Qatar Foundation’s mission by helping to build Qatar’s innovation and technology capacity.
