Job Description:
This position reports to Dr. Xi Chen, Associate Professor of the Department. of Public Sciences and Director of the Biostatistics & Bioinformatics Shared Resource of the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. This position will work with research teams on facilitating the understanding of genetic and genomic variations in human diseases especially cancers with Bioinformatics analysis such as next generation sequencing (NGS) data analysis. Individual will be responsible for developing, maintaining and implementing NGS analysis pipelines that perform QC, base calling, sequence assembly, verification and downstream annotations. Development and implementation of novel bioinformatics methods. Supervision and training of junior team members and data analysts. Work on large-scale multi-disciplinary research projects in collaboration with Statisticians, biologists and clinicians.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Pipeline development: Developing, maintaining, and implementing next generation sequencing data analysis pipelines that perform QC, base calling, sequence assembly, short-read alignment, genotype calling, transcript abundance, sequence annotation, and related bioinformatics methods. Developing and implementing novel NGS methods to improve the existing pipeline. This includes testing third-party software or development of novel methodology to fill gaps in the pipeline, as needed. Testing, characterization and integration of diverse third-party Bioinformatics algorithms; applying state-of-the-art statistical, visualization and data mining methods; working closely with lab-based experimentalists, clinicians and PIs to solve their Bioinformatics challenges. Analysis: Work with the Informatics group to provide support for large scale research projects, Sequencing Cores and the Center for Genomic Technologies; provide support for translational research in Clinical Genomics. Provide analysis of NGS data for genes and pathways, analysis of methylation data in epigenomics projects, micro-RNA target prediction; and developing and implementing new bioinformatics packages. Administrative: Supervision of junior bioinformatics team members and data analysts (e.g., statistical data analysts, post-docs, etc) on bioinformatics projects, as needed. Establishing standard operating procedures, documentation and scripts to generate custom reports. Developing materials for Bioinformatics tutorials, and training courses. Perform other duties as assigned.

The minimum requirements are: Bachelor’s Degree in Bioinformatics/Computational Biology/Computer Science or related field and three (3) years of experience working in Bioinformatics or a related field is required. Master’s Degree/PhD in Bioinformatics/Computational Biology/Computer Science or related field is preferred. Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience and/or certifications may be considered.
